Text fine and crisp throughout. Overall a very good copy. First edition of this compendium (one of two issues, the other published by Johann Coster), in which nine celebrated early modern Christian hebraists advance their views on the original pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton [YHWH]. The celebrated hebraist and Old Testament scholar Adriaan Reland (1676-1718), judged by Bayle to be one of the most learned writers of the eighteenth century, is best remembered for his works on Jewish antiquities. He edited various other collections of essays and dissertations, including Analecta Rabbinica (1702); Dissertationes miscellaneae (1706-1708); Dissertationes de nummis veterum Hebraeorum (1709). His opinion on the proper pronunciation of [YHWY] agrees with the first five hebraists in the present collection, as well as the current scholarly consensus. His lecture on the Tetragrammaton, delivered on June 22, 1614, attests to a preoccupation with methodology which would distinguish his later work.? This was later printed in the Arcanum punctationis (1624), and here in our volume.
