Eminent Scottish geologist, Sir Roderick Empey Murchison (1792-1871) was one of the founders in 1830 of the Geological Society of London and was its sometime President from 1843 to 1871. Sir Murchison was best remembered for the Silurian System and his writings on Alpine geology. Several medals were awarded to Arctic explorers: Dr. John Rae and Commander E.A.
