This was the first publication to print seven of Owen's poems together for the very first time : 'The Show', 'Strange Meeting', 'Á Terre', 'The Sentry', 'Disabled', 'The Dead Beat' and 'The Chances'. Only five poems were published in Owen's lifetime (Three in 'The Nation' and two that appeared anonymously in the 'Hydra', a journal he edited in 1917 when he was a patient at Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh). Owen's poems were not to be published as a complete volume until the following year in 1920, when they were published by Chatto and edited by Siegfried Sassoon. An important Modernist production being the first publication to print several of Owen's poems together for the very first time. In addition, this issues of 'Wheels' also featured the work of, among others, Aldous Huxley, Nancy Cunard, Iris Tree and the Sitwells'. All are protected in removable Mylar archival covers. In den WarenkorbFirst edition of the anthology which collects Wilfred Owen's poetry for the first time, printing seven of his poems, including "Strange Meeting". Aside from a few early pieces printed in The Nation and in the Craiglockhart War Hospital magazine The Hydra, Owen's poetry was entirely unpublished on his death in November 1918. Edith Sitwell, a friend of Owen's and the editor of this anthology, prepared the final texts of his poems from drafts found among his papers. She had hoped to bring out an edition of Owen's poetry and was in the process of doing so when Sassoon interceded. As well as seven poems by Owen, Wheels, 1919 collects ten poems by Sitwell, three by her brother Osbert, four by Sacheverell, and seven by Aldous Huxley. The striking cover illustration is by William Roberts (1895-1980), who studied at the Slade alongside C. R. W. Nevinson, Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash, and Dora Carrington. There, "he began to simplify his figures in a more modern, block-like manner and give his compositions an energetic, rhythmical design" (ODNB). He was briefly employed at Roger Fry's Omega Workshops in 1913 and the following year met Wyndham Lewis and joined the Vorticists; Lewis featured his work in BLAST. During the First World War, he served as a gunner on the Western Front near Ypres and as an official war artist. He later contributed several illustrations to the Cranwell edition of T. E. Lawrence's Seven Pillars of Wisdom, and his painting The Vorticists at the Restaurant de la Tour Eiffel, Spring 1915 (1961-2), depicting Lewis, Ezra Pound, and others, is held by the Tate. Octavo. Wheel vignette title page. Original purple quarter cloth, paper spine label printed in black, front cover and endpapers illustrated by William Roberts. Contemporary gift inscription to dedication page, occasional pencil marking to contents. Lightly soiled with minor wear at board edges. A very good copy.…
