Soft cover. Zustand: New. Between his resignation as Congress President in Calcutta on 29 April 1939 and his escape from his Elgin Road home on the night of 16-17 January 1941, Subhas Chandra Bose provided India with an alternative leadership in place of the old guard represented by the Gandhian High Command. His alternative was based on a commitment to anti-imperialism and future socialism. This volume brings together the writings and speeches of a crucial phase in Bose's political life immediately prior to his emergence as the Netaji of lndia's army of liberation. The themes dealt with here include the role of the left within the Indian independence movement, the Second World War as a conflict between rival imperialisms, and the need for HinduMuslim unity and CongressMuslim League understanding.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. This volume brings to readers the thoughtful voice of Subhas Chandra Bose as he spoke to audiences of students and youth across the country during the months that he was out of prison between 1929 and February 1933. It was in 1929 that Jatindranath Das a young associate of Bhagat Singh died in Lahore Jail after a hunger strike. Jatin had served in the Congress volunteer corps in 1928 under Subhas, who took charge of the funeral rites. In October 1929 Subhas journeyed from Calcutta to Lahore to deliver a message of complete emancipation to the Punjabi students conference, lauding Jatin s sacrifice. On his return to Calcutta Bose was arrested and on 23 January 1930, the day he turned thirty-three, he was imprisoned on charges of sedition. From behind bars Bose watched with admiration as Gandhi made his next moves towards civil disobedience. These are among the many fascinating episodes that comprise this volume, which shows Subhas emerging as a pan-Indian leader in his own right, and as the only real spokesman of the Left. (jacket).

Soft cover. Zustand: New. In 1938 Subhas Chandra Bose reached the peak of his political life, when he was elected President of the Indian National Congress. Leading the forces of anti- colonialism and socialism, he was re-elected in 1939, having defeated Gandhi's nominee in a bitterly contested election. However, in the face of vehement opposition from the right wing of the Congress and Gandhi, he resigned. This volume brings together Bose's letters, writings and speeches from January 1938 until just after his resignation in April 1939. It includes the famous Haripura Address of February 1938. Other pieces deal with socialism, national planning, science, Hindu Muslim relations, the role of women, and European politics. Among the 120 letters here are sets of correspondence with Gandhi, Tagore, Jinnah, and Nehru. This edition comes with a new Introduction which delves into the themes of Bose's writings, which continue to inspire the need for visionary and principled leadership in the contemporary stage of national and global politics.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Subhas and Sarat is a closely observed portrait of the Bose family of Bengalespecially its two most famous members, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and his older brother, Sarat Chandra Boseand their role in India's freedom struggle. The author, Sisir Kumar Bose (19202000)Netaji's nephew, and the son of Sarat Chandra Bosefocuses especially on the period spanning the mid-1920s to the turbulent 1940s when the freedom movement was at its peak. We are offered unprecedented insights into the participation of Subhas and Sarat in the politics of the time. From being a careful observer of the events taking place around him, the author becomes a participant in Netaji's great escape from the colonial authorities, when he drives his uncle, under cover of darkness, from Calcutta to the Gomoh railhead in Bihar, from where Netaji travels to Kabuland goes on to become the Supreme Commander of the Indian National Army. Illustrated with rare photographs and documents, this lucidly written memoir is both the most original account of the public and private lives of Subhas and Sarat Bose and an enthralling narrative of India's journey to independence.
