27 cm; 64-222, X (of XI) pages. Lacks final leaf with page XI; pages IX-X supplied in facsimile. Bound in recent half cloth over marbled boards, titled on spine. Astonishingly well-traveled (considering the absence of mechanization), Dr. William MacGregor was posted as a medical officer first in the Seychelles, then in Mauritius, then he moved up the ranks to become Chief Medical Officer in Fiji before his appointment to the post of administrator of British New Guinea, and later Governor of Lagos! In 1904, he was appointed Governor of Newfoundland. In that post, he organized and personally conducted a scientific expedition to Labrador, the aim of which was to survey its coast and investigate its natural resources. The results of this expedition, published here, were of anthropological as well as geographical and meteorological interest, for which he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Extremely rare.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. "Hundreds of years ago [British New Guinea] was put on the map as a shaded spot marked 'Islands of the bad people.' For the last half-dozen years its character has been studied. Now we purpose to review briefly what we have been learned of the country and of the people for whom we [the British] have thus become responsible." - page 1. "Sir William MacGregor (1846-1919) was Lieutenant-Governor of British New Guinea from 1888 until 1898. He had to deal with many tribes of a warlike people. It was necessary at times to make punitive expeditions but, by tact and perseverance, he eventually brought about a state of law and order. Some of this related to the annual headhunting raid and cannibalisation of coastal tribes by the Tugeri warriors, which ended in 1891." - Wikipedia.
