Original Quarter Cloth hardbac. Zustand: See Description. First Edition Thus. 1927. First edition thus. 290pp. The book is one of an edition limited to 1300 copies, but is unnumbered. Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) was an English dramatist, architect and herald. He is probably best known today as the designer of Blenheim Palace a…nd Castle Howard, but he also wrote many popular plays, some of which caused controversy at the time. The volume for sale is the third (of four) of a collection of Vanbrugh's works, and contains four of his plays, together with some account of the history of their production. The book is bound in the original blue paper covered boards with a blue cloth spine and a paper title label. This is an ex-library copy but has few library marks and is otherwise in very good condition. The case of the book has sme shelf wear with light soiling and there is a little damage and loss to the paper covering the corner tips. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is faded with a reference number written in black near the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean and the only library indications appear to be limited to two stamps and some reference numbers on the front fixed endpaper and the reverse of the title page. There are traces of a removed pocket on the front fixed endpaper. PLEASE NOTE: Heavyish book so a little extra may be needed for shipping to non-UK customers.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About The Book: India's Plight is a critical examination of British colonial policies in India, highlighting the economic exploitation and social injustices faced by the Indian populace. The book delves into the detrimental effects of British taxation, trade monopolies, and administrat…ive neglect, which led to widespread poverty and famines. It underscores how colonial governance prioritized British interests over Indian welfare, resulting in the impoverishment of the Indian economy and society. See Webb's entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, aged and worn with traces of glue from mount at head. Folded twice. Addressed to 'Rev. A. R. F. Hyslop, M.A. / Warden, / Glenalmond College, PERTHSHIRE.' 1st edition. Hardcover. Mint in mint dustjacket, featuring artwork pattern by Peter Blake. Sir Peter Blake, one of the most eminent of modern British artists and often described as the father of Pop Art, has designed posters, labels, postcards, covers, calendars, book jackets and record sleeves, the most famous of which are his…iconic cover for the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, and his cover for Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? The two editors of this book, in the publisher's Design series, have assembled over 150 examples in colour of both Blake's fine art and his commercial art, and in their accompanying text they show how, at various stages of his career, Blake has embraced different art forms and processes, such as collages and ink-jet printing. The book is boldly signed by Sir Peter and the two editors, unique thus, with a wide variety of the artist's designs on show.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Dust Jacket. First Edition. "The record of this trial, which follows, is the verbatim, official record. Much of it is a translation from German, and it has only been edited where necessary to make the meaning clear: it pretends to no literary elegance. It is hoped that in this way it reflects better…the atmosphere of the trial and the extempore speeches and questions and answers." - Preface. "This [report] is being published not to encourage a morbid interest, nor to keep alive feelings of ill-will against our late enemies. But because the horror through which the world passed in those dark years [of WWII] was not just a nightmare which cannot recur, but is something against which the collective conscience and alert vigilance of mankind, asserting the rule of law in international affairs as in municipal ones, must protect us. The Natzweiler [concentration camp] record is terrible." - Foreword. Wikipedia reports that the Natzweiler-Struthof Nazi concentration camp, located on territory annexed from France in 1940, held 52,000 prisoners between 1941 and 1944, approximately 22,000 of whom are estimated to have died at the camp and its sub-camps. The prisoners were mainly from resistance movements in German-occupied territories. 233 pages. Index. Black and white photographic plates. Unmarked with above-average wear and fading to original red cloth. Endpapers soiled. Contents moderately tanned with age. Binding intact. No dust jacket. A rare and worthy reference example of this important history. Kehr & Langmaid 6161, Laska 1670.; War Crimes Trials, Volume V; 8vo.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. First. PRESENTATION COPY, WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. First edition. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1846. Two volumes. Duodecimo in 6s (7 3/16" x 4 9/16", 183mm x 115mm). [Full collation available.] Bound in the publisher's presentation black morocco. On the boards, a double gilt fillet border s…urrounding a large gilt scrollwork vignette. On the spine, five raised bands with a dashed gilt roll. In the panels, gilt scrollwork with guilloche at the bottom. Title and number gilt to the second panel, within a double gilt fillet border. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards, continuing onto the inside dentelle. All edges of the text-block gilt. Wear to the extremities. Some scattered foxing. Altogether a very good set. Presentation inscription from J. Watson Webb to W.S. Stell ("from his friend") to both volumes; in vol. I, to the recto of the first free end-paper; in vol. II, to the recto of the initial binder's blank. Bookplates of Amos Tuck French (Tucks Eden, Tuxedo Park) and Jay Snider to the front paste-down of both volumes. An explanatory note manuscript tipped in to the first free end-paper of vol. I. Presented in a custom quarter black morocco slip-case with two black cloth chemises by J. Desmonts, J. Macdonald Co., Norwalk, Conn. James Watson Webb (1802-1884) was a general and a newspaperman and eventually an ambassador. He identifies himself as the editor of the account, though bibliographies (e.g., Wagner) attribute the authorship to him. The Amateur Traveler is Sir William Drummond Stewart (1795-1871), who is also fairly patently the title-character. Though Stewart has long been known as the patron of Alfred Jacob Miller, the great artist of the American West, he is being re-examined in the twenty-first century as a chronicler of queer love in the unexplored wilds. Stewart himself had a lover, Antoine Clement, whom he variously called his valet or footman. Stewart held an elaborate all-male Renaissance-costumed fête at what is now called Fremont Lake in Wyoming. It is easy to see the influence Altowan might have had on Annie Proulx's "Brokeback Mountain." Whatever Webb's role in the production of Altowan, he shepherded it through the press in New York and was able to inscribe the present copy to his friend W[illiam] S[horter] Stell (1800-1863), a Philadelphia merchant who emigrated with his family to Manchester, England. The exact connection between the two men is unclear; John Ashton Nicholls recalls being introduced to General Webb by a letter from Stell, so the relationship was doubtless close. The book passed through the family. Stell's daughter, Julia, married Edward Tuck (noted in the slip tipped in to the front paste-down of vol. I), for whom the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth is named. Tuck's half-sister, Ellen Tuck, was married to Francis Ormond French, president of the Manhattan Trust Co. Their son, Amos Tuck French, who in turn became president of the Manhattan Trust Co., came by whatever means to own the books. Jay T. Snider, also a prominent Philadelphian (and former owner of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team), has disbursed at several single-owner sales his collection of important Americana. Purchased at his sale, Christie's New York (20 June 2005, lot 241). Fieldl 1632,Graff 3986, Howes S991, Sabin 91392, Wagner-Camp-Becker 125.

An interesting letter, in which Webb sets out his approach to bookplate design. According to his entry in the Oxford DNB, 'By 1899 Webb was in poor health and losing money. His meagre savings were insufficient to build a cottage, so he accepted Caxtons, a four-bedroom sixteenth-century yeoman's house at Worth, near Crawley, Suss…ex, offered at a selflessly low rental by his friend William Scawen Blunt.' For the context of the present letter, see the letter from Webb to Sydney Cockerell, 1 September 1902, in volume 3 of John Apin's edition of Webb's letters. The present item is 1p, landscape 8vo, and consists of eighteen lines written in a tiny hand in pencil, with a number of ink additions that raise the possibility that it may be a draft. Addressed to 'Dear Mr. Holliday' and signed 'Ph: W.' In fair condition, on worn paper with a block of sunning. Folded into three equal sections by two vertical creases. He begins by stating that on 16 August Sydney Cockerel sent him [in a letter now in the British Library] an extract of one of Holliday's letters to him, beginning 'I suppose we are getting nearer to the time when Philip Webb will be at liberty to think about my book plate'. Webb's reply is: 'Now, & at this time, I can only answer with your word 'nearer' - for there is one in hand (or rather in rough idea) which has to be done before yours, on the principle of "first come, first served".' On the wider question he writes: 'I need scarcely add, that to do anything for you - which I thought passably fit to let go, would please me much; & therefore, I write the following with that not too forlorn hope. Cannot you think of something in your life, or of belongings, or fancy, or fact, which would be a hook on which to hang my [last word underlined] "fancy"? You see - or wd. guess, that I do not like to make such a design which has not some sufficient significance in it - great or small, - as the case may be - and for motive: when I have this it tethers me to some positive instead of a negative course; though I might add to or deduct from my brief according to the demands of decorative art - or my own wilfulness?' He turns to the 'third to be served' with a bookplate, John Feeney, proprietor of the Birmingham Daily Post. In that case 'the spirit is willing but the time and aptitude are but small. There is always a load on my spirit of things undone, when undoing to get into bed 365 nights in the year, so that I long to unship my pack of sin as Bunyan's "Christian" did his. What fellows these Cockerells & Walkers are for getting me into this "slough of despond"!' A postscript refers to 'Catterson Smith & the mace' (explained in John Apin's edition of Webb's letters).
