This concerns a lib…el and assault case in Cheshire, brought by John Salt against Henry Tomkinson, and the defendant's legal record in Stafford. 'O Harry, Harry, how art thou fallen! From being a puisant sage of the law, thou art now held forth to the contempt of all mankind, an ignorant lawyer, a blundering agent, a condemned culprit; thou art become the laughing-stock of women and children thou passest on the streets. I can compare thee to nothing but some unseamly hedge-hog, who, when plunged into a deep water, swims round and round till he cuts his own throat.' In 1782 Tomkinson published, A State of the Evidence given upon a late trial at Stafford Assizes, and of the judgment of the Court of King's Bench, with a narrative of the facts, to which this present appears to be a spirited retort.
