Half-bound with tan boards and a complementary taupe leather spine, the leather extending onto the boards by approximately 4 cms, front and rear, and all corners. The edge…points at which the leather binding attaches to the boards have exquisite detail; a fine line of tooling to all borders. Five raised bands to the spine, with gold lettering and blocked title and volume detail present. The leather corners and strips show light mottling on all five volumes, SPINES ARE UNAFFECTED. The volumes are an impressive sight on the shelf. Light shelf and handling wear overall, including tanning and foxing to pageblocks, occasional foxing within volumes. Further details to note: Vol. I. 1422-1586, published 1897. Light wear includes minor rubbing of leather to spine head and foot, light scratches to spine band. Slight bumping to front corner. Light foxing to initial pages, otherwise clean. Vol. II.1586-1660, published 1898. Within, frontispiece is a fold-out map of Lincoln's Inn Field; light creasing, with a small, closed tear at spine point, otherwise unmarked. Vol. III. 1660-1775, published 1899. Includes a pull-out frontispiece, a list of the Members of the Society on the 29th February 1671, including Charles II. Pull-out is tanned, with a small closed tear at spine point, otherwise in fine condition. The leading edges of pages 305-308 are damaged at a length of approx. 6 cm, midpoint; creased with short open tears, otherwise pages are unmarked, and tightly bound. Small blemish to pageblock face. Vol. IV. 1776-1845, published 1902. Frontispiece is a fold-out facsimile of the grant by Henry III to Ralph Neville, Bishop of Chicester, of John Herlizun's forfeited lands in New Street, Chancery Lane, 1228. Tanning only, otherwise in fine condition. Also within this volume is a colour map from the Ordnance Survey of Lincoln's Inn Field, 1902, colours vibrant and true. This volume has light colour fading to the front board at the point where it meets the leather strip of binding. Light foxing to occasional pages, noted on those pages facing the photographs of 'The Principal Pieces of Plate', belonging to the Society. In conclusion, a beautiful, fine set.
