Brown 'promised £100 towards the fittings', and is sending a cheque for that amount. Continues: 'I clearly see you will do no good unless you have one or two active gentlemen amongst you who will raise the ways & means to do what is necessary, & a much more active Chairman than myself.' Scarce work, in any early edition.Written by the botanist, playwright and apothecary, Sir John Hill, who was known for his illustrated botanical compendium 'The Vegetable System', as well as for being a somewhat controversial figure. Publishing under a pseudonym, Hill wrote many critical articles broadcasting his opinions, detailing the lack of scientific standards of the Royal Society. This particular review is complete in eight parts, examining different papers of the Arts, Antiquities, Medicine, Miracles, Zoophytes, Animals, Vegetables and Minerals, published by the Royal Society of London. With a preface to the front and a contents to the rear. For the recipient John Davy (1790-1868), anatomist and physiologist, brother of Sir Humphrey Davy, see his entry in the Oxford DNB. Two letters, both in good condition, attached to one another along one edge, with thin strip from mount adhering. Both letters are bifoliums, and both have had the second leaf, trimmed along the fore-edge, resulting in each case to slight loss to the address. ONE: 30 August 1827. 1p, 12mo. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. In den WarenkorbSixth Edition. 215 x 133 mm. (8 1/2 x 5 1/4"). viii, xl, 376 pp. Sympathetic light speckled half calf over marbled paper boards, raised bands, red and black morocco labels. With 54 hand-colored plates, including frontispiece, illustrating plants discussed in the text. A couple of ink corrections in a contemporary hand. Johnston 760. Variable foxing, with perhaps a fourth of the text noticeably foxed, but the plates almost entirely unaffected, a few stains to the gutter from pressed flowers (now absent), other trivial defects, but a perfectly readable copy, with quite attractive plates, in a pleasing, virtually unworn retrospective binding. First published as "The Useful Family Herbal," in 1764, this popular work provides a description of British plants helpful for at-home remedies. The highlight of the volume is the well-drawn and richly colored plates, which Nissen tells us were drawn by the important natural history illustrator Sydenham Edwards (1769-1819), whose work DNB describes as "among the best scientific illustrations of the day." Hill (1716?-75) was a perplexingly self-destructive personality who nevertheless managed to produce useful books. He was a surgeon, an unsuccessful actor, and an apothecary who made considerable money selling quack medicines; he published several books (including some botanical works of substantial value like the present one) and a steady series of (usually abusive) periodicals; he was constantly scheming to make money and to raise his reputation above its rightful altitude; and he was always embroiled in controversies because of his ungovernable proclivity toward impertinence and derision as well as his overweening vanity. This last quality, together with Hill's direct attacks on Garrick and his friends, prompted the latter's memorable epigram reflecting the doctor/actor's reputation among his detractors: "For physic and farces, his equal there scarce is:/ His farces are physic, his physic a farce is." After publishing some not insignificant scientific writings, including a supplement to Chambers' "Dictionary," Hill tried to obtain admission to the Royal Society, but his unprincipled character blocked any hope of membership. Despite his reputation, "The Family Herbal," offered here in its sixth edition, was obviously viewed as serious and significant enough to be reprinted a half century (and later) after its first appearance.…

In den WarenkorbLondon : Printed for J. Whiston and B. White, etc., 1752, 8°, (8), 415, (1) pp., contemporary leather; rebacked, fine copy. First Edition! "No text, however, better embodied the conflicting project of natural description or more cogently posed questions about its fundamental purposes than the Essays in Natural History and Philosophy (1752) by the apothecary John Hill. Hill's many writings included works on Linnean classification, vegetable remedies-uncharitably termed "quack"-medicine, zoology, mineralogy, and especially botany. He is of interest to us because, along with the unillustrated Essays, the third volume of his illustrated General Natural History (1752) studied those animals "too minute for unassisted sight." He coined lasting names, such as "paramecium," for those invisibles that "had none before." Less respectable than Baker, who was a member of the Royal Society, Hill with even greater assiduousness devoted himself to the confection of popular accounts of microscopic examinations. He, too, pleaded for the "Combination of the useful with the entertaining in these Studies." His approach gave the illusion of looking in on a private world. More of a scopophiliac than his contemporary. Hill took tiny entities and subjected them to a controlling gaze. This obsessive watching veered toward perversity by forcing a change in their customary environment and behavior. The "allurements" of natural history, which "astonish our Eyes." were presented in the Essays through a series of sensory impressions so melodramatic, perhaps, precisely because they were not accompanied by plates. Moreover, the narrative made things happen, as in the movies, one after the other, and as if right there in front of us. Sanguinary metaphors of microscopic wars humanized Hill's tale of a heretofore unknown insect inhabiting the hollow joints of a species of coralline. Because events were seen close up, they took on the brilliance of flickering patterns beheld in a dark room. ." Hill (1770) had employed dyes in studying the microscopic structure of timer, and that beyond the question, his work was actually histological in nature. His methods in fact, were more like modern histology than the subsequent work of Ehrenberg." H.J. Conn, The History of Staining (1933), p.9 "Hill did not rely on any one method, but studied the structure of stems in many ways. He used a more elaborate method of maceration than Martin, and was the first to use maceration in the study of wood, sinking a loose wicker basket containing the sticks he wished to study into a stream until the tissues were well softened. This identical method, which was rediscovered by the younger Moldenhawer in 1812, is considered by Sachs as one of the great steps in the progress of phytotomy. Hill also makes the first mention of a method of preservation of material for further study. The practice of dropping the macerated pieces of wood into a solution of alum and then transferring them to spirits of wine, after thoroughly drying, resembles in a very crude manner our modern method of fixing and hardening. The reason for this is seen in his statement that 'Nothing but spirit of wine can preserve these tender bodies, and, till I found this method of hardening them first, the liquor often destroyed them. . . . " "Hill is undoubtedly the first to have used staining as an aid in the study of microscopical anatomy of plants. He prepared an alcoholic tincture of cochineal, in which, after it had been filtered, he placed the stems of plants for a while, discarding that portion which had been immersed in the fluid when he made his sections. Another method of staining used was even more advanced since it involved a mordanting of the tissues before developing the color. A solution of sugar of lead was prepared, filtered, and put in a tea-cup and the sticks to be studied were allowed to remain in this fluid for two days. An essential part of this operation was the 'whelming' of the tea-cup with a wineglass to prevent the drying of the material. While the tissue was soaking in the lead solution he prepared a solution of quick lime and orpiment in water and then transferred the material from the tea-cup to the second solution for two days. When the sticks were first placed in the second solution they were colorless, but in a short time they became deep brown. By means of this staining he was able to demonstrate the existence of structures invisible in the uncolored material. A third method, which was an injection rather than a staining process, was by careful drying of the wood and boiling it in green sealing wax. By this procedure the vessels became thoroughly impregnated with the green sealing wax and the 'split pieces resemble striped satins, in a way scarce to be credited.' " "Writers concerning the history of the microscope generally describe the 18th century as being barren of developments .…

In den WarenkorbSatirical print, folio, engraved surface 13 x 8 inches, a very good, clean copy apart from a split along edge of plate mark (no loss), laid down on a light card.Sole edition. The self-styled 'Sir' John Hill, sometime a physician and an actor, is best known for the 'Paper War' in 1751-2 between his 'Inspector' columns in the London Daily Journal and Fielding's Covent-Garden Journal. It began in good humour but soon turned to real antagonism after the incident depicted at Ranelagh. In his column of 30 April 1752, Hill had attacked the character of Mountefort Brown, a young buck about town. When the two men met accidentally at Ranelagh a few nights later, Brown gave him a drubbing. This print shows them at the entrance to the Rotunda. Brown has pulled off 'Sir' John's wig and seized him by the ear, crying out 'Draw your Sword Swaggerer'. Hill is trying to pull away and calling out to Mr. Cole, the Master of Ceremonies, 'Oh! Mr C get me a Constable, for here's a Gentn going to murder me'. As two constables approach from behind, Cole tells Brown; 'Yes Sir Yes. Pray Young Gentleman don't hurt him for he never has any meaning in what he writes.' The text below quotes Falstaff ('I am a Rogue if I were not at half Sword with a Dozen of them two hours together'), and prints an extract from the Covent-Garden Journal reporting that Brown had appeared before a justice on Dr. Hill's complaint, but was admitted to bail when it was clear that Hill was not in any danger of his life. The court was Bow Street and the justice was in fact Fielding. 'Here was a very comic situation a source of mirth for months. Squibs and sixpenny pamphlets filled the air . More entertaining than the pamphlets were two prints immediately put into circulation', A Night Scene at Ranelagh and Le Malade imaginaire. 'After this fracas, Hill became very bitter towards Fielding' (Wilbur L. Cross, The History of Henry Fielding, II, 419-22).Catalogue of Prints and Drawing in the British Museum Political and Personal Satires, no. 3183.…

"The first use of dyes in histology. Hill (1770) had employed dyes in studying the microscopic structure of timer, and that beyond the question, his work was actually histological in nature. His methods in fact, were more like modern histology than the subsequent work of Ehrenberg." H.J. Conn, The History of Staining (1933), p.9 "Historians emphasize the barrenness of the 18th century, as compared with the 17th, in the development of the microscope. With one notable exception, this is also true for microtechnique. The great originality which John Hill showed in the manipulation of the material described in his work entitled "The construction of timber, explained by the microscope" has not been given due credit. In his biography of John Hill, T. G. Hill has entirely failed to call attention to one of the most important features of John Hill's work, namely, the superiority of the microtechnique which he employed. Methods were used which had not been employed up to that time and which did not come into general use until fifty years later, and then as rediscoveries by others. Hill did not rely on any one method but studied the structure of stems in many different ways. He used a more elaborate method of maceration than Martin, and was the first to use maceration in the study of wood, sinking a loose wicker basket containing the sticks he wished to study into a stream until the tissues were well oftened. This identical method which was rediscovered by the younger Moldenhawer in 1812 is considered by Sachs as one of the great steps in the progress of phytotomy. Hill also makes the first mention of a method of preservation of material for further study. The practice of dropping the macerated pieces of wood into a solution of alum and then transfering them to spirits of wine, after thoroughly drying, resembles in a very crude manner our modern method of fixing and hardening. The reason for this is seen in his statement that "Nothing but spirit of wine can preserve these tender bodies, and, till I found this method of hardening them first, the liquor often destroyed them. , Holzner thinks that Sarrabat or Reichel should have the credit for being the first to use staining methods since they put sticks into colored liquids and then noted the rise of the color. Apathy has raised the question as to whether this work should be regarded as at all comparable to our modern methods of staining microscopical preparations. Judging by the excerpts cited from these articles by Holzner they were macroscopical studies only, and it is very probable that Hill was not aware of them, or the work of Bonnet. Hill is undoubtedly the first to have used staining as an aid in the study of microscopical anatomy of plants. He prepared .…
