A fine original colour lithograph from Vanity Fair, a magazine which was published from 1869-1914, featuring a large caricature portrait each week. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of General Sir James Murray, shown in his uniform with his medals, with the caption "The Master General". General Sir James (Wolfe) Murray, KCB (13 March 1853 - 17 October 1919), was a British officer serving as Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS) during the first years of World War I.

He begins by asking Mann to 'send the proceeds for the enclosed cheque into the proper hands to discharge my debt for the pencils'. He 'had to run down by night mail on Sunday night & back on Monday night, to attend the funeral of my dear old friend James Muir who died after a very short illness'. He expresses sympathy for 'Poor Brough'. 'Michie' (Scottish painter James Coutts Michie) is 'truly as ever & so far as he is concerned they may sink Havana he is proof against all temptations. He is still human, so far as stimulating beverages are concerned.' Letter Two: 6 November 1899. 3pp., 12mo. 'I was, as you will understand, very sorry to learn from Whyte that you were gone from the Grand. I did not look forward with pleasure to returning there had I known of any other place suitable I think I should have changed, but Grieve proved very kind indeed, & did his best to make the house to me what it was with yourself & Mrs. Mann there. When Whyte told me the Circumstances of the change I immediately thought of the picture I promised you'. Letter Three: From the Old Red Lion Hotel. 11 September 1901. 3pp., 12mo. He congratulates Mann on his becoming a grandfather, and discusses his family. Note: 3 February 1905. 'My dear Mann, | One word of message but writ large. Note at head of page in a third contemporary hand: 'Copied for Col. the Rt. Hon. Chas. Yorke - 14/7/7'. The circular states that 'Clothing for the next Year may be immediately provided', with any not wanted by a certain date ('from a Decrease in the Number of Supernumeraries') 'to be considered as public Stores'. Endorsed in the third hand: 'War Office 1807 / Secy. of War. July 10 / Clothing for 1808 / [Co]py made out for Col. Yorke / [1]4/7/7'.
