A selection of poetry collected by David Dalrymple, later to become famous not only as a lawyer but as a leading figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. The poetry i…s mostly contemporary or quite recent: Pope, Doddridge, Needler, Blacklock, and Thomson. There are, however, a few earlier poets, including Milton (p. 31) and Donne (p. 53). Interestingly, in his preface, Dalrymple apologises for Donne's rendition of Psalm 137: it 'may, in the ears of many persons, sound uncouth: but to those who consider in what times it was written, this defect will appear less remarkable. The nervous expression, and the manly sense of the whole, will more than excuse those blemishes, which are to be imputed not so much to the author, as to the times in which he flourished' (p. x).

Minor bubbling to rear board, hinges reinforced. Moderate toning to interior, occasional light foxing, mostly to margins, light soiling in a few places, somewhat heavier to title page and final leaf, light creasing to margins of a few leaves. Ownership signature ("David Brown") and early annotation to title page, additional ownership inscription ("Geo: Martin- from a friend-") to head of p. 1, later (and early?) manuscript corrections and additions, some quite extensive, in a few places, affected by trimming on p. 22 of the second section only. $450. * First edition. An important figure in Scottish law and letters, Dalrymple, Lord Hailes, 3rd Baronet of Hailes, was an advocate, judge and historian. The present work is one of the earliest comprehensive biographies of the members of the Court of Session. It was revised and expanded twice, in 1794 and 1798. The annotations and corrections to our copy, mostly to the Catalogue, both follow the pasted-in errata slip and add some 39 names from 1775-1816.
