From the Preface During the past 50 years India has made significant progress in fisheries sector. This has been possible through science and technology with large number of scientific manpower skilled fishermen and fish farmers and with vast and varied natural resources. India has the potential to achieve new peaks both in capture and culture fisheries. There is no reason to doubt that India will not be able to cope with the challenges and take advantage of the opportunities of the sector especially when it has a solid framework of planning and managing fisheries and has a determination to optimize productivity both in aquaculture and open water in a sustainable manner considering not only economic viability but environment sustainability and social equity.
