Hardcover. Zustand: New. "Travels in Western India" was Col. James Tod's second work which was published in 1839 after his sudden and premature death in 1835. The two volumes of his "Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan" published in 1829 and 1832 were "received with considerable favour" in Europe while these works immortalised his name in Indian historiography. Tod wrote his work at a time which saw the beginning of Indian archaeology and historical researches. It was therefore natural that his "Travels", though invaluable in as much as it portrays the culture and society not yet influenced by the west "and still steeped in medieval traditions and atmosphere of by-gone decades" was bound to have many errors. There was also need to identify various sites and persons mentioned by Col. Tod. Late Maharaj Kumar Dr. Raghubir Sinh of Sitamau put in immense labour in correcting, clarifying and throwing further light on the places, events, towns etc. mentioned by Col. Tod. With his usual thoroughness, Dr. Raghubir Sinh gives exact location of almost every place mentioned in the "Travels", corrects the names of the towns and people which an Englishman could not pronounce properly, and gives additional information about Tod's statements which were based on the information personally gathered by him from individuals, inscriptions; historical works and legends. It will be no exaggeration to say that without the help of Dr. Raghubir Sinh's annotations and observations, one can understand or use Tod's "Travels in Western India" only partially. The value of Dr. Raghubir Sinh's contribution in the form of this volume will be appreciated by every serious scholar of Indian history and is a testimony to his amazing scholarship, if one at all is needed. This volume is thus essential in understanding correctly Col. James Tod's remarkably informative travel account written in his inimitable style." (jacket).

Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The author has delved deep into the history of Malwa which was one of the most notable provinces of India during the Hindu and an early Muslim period of our history, and its influence on Hindu culture was of an abiding character. And yet has up to now lacked a history worthy of its past. With immense labour he has added his intimate knowledge of the topography and genealogy of Malwa, which no other scholars can equal. The result is a study at once intensive, accurate and exhaustive. Moreover, he has depicted vividly in different chapters on the economic condition, social changes and culture of the province which is usually by others. This work was also one of the first which attempted to lay forth the history of this area from the time of Aurangazeb (1656-1707) up to the year 1765. It contains 7 chapters that chart the history of this province and 2 maps. This book is as readable as it is packed with learning and exemplary for other provincial histories of India in future. In den WarenkorbFirst Edition. [Indian history and politics] INSCRIBED ADVANCE COPY. First edition. Octavo (23 x 15cm), pp.xxvi; 469 [3]. INSCRIBED by the author in blue ink to flyleaf: 'Presented to the | most Honourable the Marquess of | Zetland, P.C., G.C.S.I., | G.C.I.E., etc. | the Secretary of State for | India, | With best compliments & | all regards of the | Author | Raghubir Sinh | 31-viii-'37.' Publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to spine, gilt emblem to upper board. An interesting copy bibliographically being one of the copies privately printed in Sitamau, Central India in March 1937, intended for private circulation. This title was then published in Bombay in 1938 by D.B. Taraporewala Sons and Co., this particular copy having labels attached by the publisher to the reverse of the copyright page obscuring the original publication information. Light spotting to edges, light wear to cloth with a small dent to foot of upper board. Very good. Sinh was President of Sitamau State Rajya Parishad in 1939-41 and 1945-46, and later Member of Parliament for Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha between 1952 and 1960. Lawrence John Lumley Dundas, 2nd Marquess of Zetland (1876-1961), spent most of his career in India, serving as Secretary of State between 1935 and 1940. He was a key mover behind the 1935 Government of India Act, which attempted to give India greater autonomy and democratic representation, and was eventually forced to resign his post when Churchill, his implacable foe, became Prime Minister in 1940. Signed.
