Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Two strangers saw the car. Both of them reported it. Delhi, 26 August 1978. At dusk on a Saturday, a brother and sister are taken off the road into a stolen yellow Fiat. Inside fifteen minutes, two strangers see the struggle. One phones the police with the number off the back of the car. One goes after it on a scooter, loses it at a red light, and is told he has come to the wrong police station. The children are killed that night. Everybody in India knows how this ends. The two men who did it, Ranga and Billa, were hanged at Tihar Jail on the last morning of January 1982, and for a generation of Delhi parents the case is the reason the children were called in before dark. Eleven Feet is the story of the three years and five months in between, told by one of the two men, from a cell eleven feet from the other. It is the story of a city that watched, a police force that followed its rules, two soldiers on a night train who asked a stranger for his identity card, and a court that had to decide what a confession was worth after the man who made it took it back. A novel built on the record. The dates, the places, the evidence and the courts are as they were. What is invented is the inside of a man: a family, a father, a city, and a reason for the way he speaks. The book never puts what was done to a sixteen-year-old girl on the page, and it never argues that the man telling the story was owed anything. Written in plain English for readers in India and everywhere the case is still remembered.…

Zustand: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 520 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | During the past 15 years, cellular and molecular approaches have emerged as valuable adjuncts to supplement and complement conventional breeding methods for a wide variety of crop plants. Biotechnology increasingly plays a role in the creation, conservation, characterization and utilization of genetic variability for germplasm enhancement. For instance, anther/microspore culture, somaclonal variation, embryo culture and somatic hybridization are being exploited for obtaining incremental improvement in the existing cultivars. In addition, genes that confer insect- and disease-resistance, abiotic stress tolerance, herbicide tolerance and quality traits have been isolated and re-introduced into otherwise sensitive or susceptible species by a variety of transgenic techniques. Together these transformative methodologies grant access to a greater repertoire of genetic diversity as the gene(s) may come from viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects, animals, human beings, unrelated plants oreven be artificially derived. Remarkable achievements have been made in the production, characterization, field evaluation and commercialization of transgenic crop varieties worldwide. Likewise, significant advances have been made towards increasing crop yields, improving nutritional quality, enabling crops to be raised under adverse conditions and developing resistance to pests and diseases for sustaining global food and nutritional security. The overarching purpose of this 3-volume work is to summarize the history of crop improvement from a technological perspective but to do so with a forward outlook on further advancement and adaptability to a changing world. Our carefully chosen ¿case studies of important plant crops¿ intend to serve a diverse spectrum of audience looking for the right tools to tackle complicated local and global issues. …

Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Radio over Fiber (RoF) technique combines high capacity of optical fiber and mobility of cellular radio system for next generation speedy networks due to well known advantages like ultrahigh bandwidth, elimination of frequency congestion, low transmission loss, low power consumption and mobility to serve both fixed and mobile users. A bidirectional SCM-ASK model for RoF communication system that incorporates optical mm-wave generation and wavelength reuse for uplink connection has been proposed in this work. For short and medium distance RoF system, various parameters such as laser source power level (in dBm), laser linewidth (in MHz), number of RF channels and their frequency spacing, EDFA gain and power and MZM bias and modulation voltages should be carefully chosen for achieving minimum bit error rate (BER) and high Q-factor. A RoF system having 2-10 km radius (micro/macro cells) give excellent performance in the improvements of BER as well as Q-factor.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Plant improvement has shifted its focus from yield, quality and disease resistance to factors that will enhance commercial export, such as early maturity, shelf life and better processing quality. Conventional plant breeding methods aiming at the improvement of a self-pollinating crop, such as wheat, usually take 10-12 years to develop and release of the new variety. During the past 10 years, significant advances have been made and accelerated methods have been developed for precision breeding and early release of crop varieties. This work summarizes concepts dealing with germplasm enhancement and development of improved varieties based on innovative methodologies that include doubled haploidy, marker assisted selection, marker assisted background selection, genetic mapping, genomic selection, high-throughput genotyping, high-throughput phenotyping, mutation breeding, reverse breeding, transgenic breeding, shuttle breeding, speed breeding, low cost high-throughput field phenotyping, etc. It is an important reference with special focus on accelerated development of improved crop varieties.…
