Contents Publishers note 1 On nationalism in India 2 Theorising communalism in India 3 Communalism in contemporary IndiaComprising three early writings of Professor Randhir Singh this slim volume deals with the topical issues of nationalism and communalism in IndiaDiscussing Indian nationalism from the standpoint of its revolutionary tradition Bhagat Singh and others the author makes a distinction between nationalism before and after 1947 The former was progressive and liberationist in its opposition to imperialism and the latter can well be reactionary in that is serves to obscure the reality of our class-divided society and helps line up people behind the ruling class politics The two pieces on communalism are essentially theoretical exercises It is suggested that most contemporary thinking writing or theorization on communalism its achievements notwithstanding is seriously flawed by an ideological error on the one hand and a methodological limitation on the other The ideological error which has virtually pre-empted the entire field of thought or study on communalism in this country lies in understanding communalism from the standpoint of nationalism And the methodological limitation lies in studying contemporary communalism in an essentially empiricist and often historical manner Both the error and the limitation are critically examined to argue for the validity of a Marxist approach to the study of social phenomenon in the present case of communalism As the argument proceeds the notion of ethical neutrality a staple of mainstream scholarship is questioned It is pointed out that every explanation or understanding invariably has a value slop that is it is suggestive of a prescription Therefore your understanding necessarily yields response to the problem of communalism; it could be liberal radical or revolutionary response Hence the importance of how one explains or understands communalism in modern India In deference to conventional practice the author concludes with a definition of communalism in contemporary India jacket 96 pp.…

Paperback. Zustand: As New. New. Essentially a theoretical exercise this slim volume T. Nagi Reddy Memorial Lecture offers a Marxist view of the current economic and political situation in India. Focussed on and detailing the post independence (Nehruvian) National Project its outcome and collapse the ruling classes shift to globalisation an openly avowed capitalist path of development as their new strategic option and contemporary India's most important unraised political question the question of a people's strategic option an alternative path of development distinct from and in opposition to that of India's ruling classes the argument touches upon such issues as the concepts of globalisation and development the current crisis of global capitalism Marx's perspective on socialism and the changed reality of the world the Soviet experience and achievement the need to dissociate socialism from authoritarianism it has come to be associated with the pursuit of revolutionary politics in regimes of bourgeois democracy and so on. Pointing out that development as something desirable is not synonymous with capitalist development the author argues for a socialism oriented path of development for the country and concludes with a brief comment addressed to the revolutionary Left in India that T. Nagi Reddy was associated with. 120 pp.…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This volume has three parts. Part One consists of Randhir Singh's seminal philosophical work, Reason, Revolution and Political Theory which was written not just as a response, as he claimed it was- to the British political theorist, Michael Oakeshott's book, Rationalism in Politics and Other Essays, but as an alternative theoretical treatise on social enquiry. The questions raised by Randhir Singh in the 1960s have acquired even more significance today as the debates on similar questions on science and philosophy, facts and values, ideology and practice unfold vigorously in the twenty first century. Part Two contains some of his well known essays on Marxism giving his non-determinist, dialectical materialist interpretation and how Marxist approach could be applied to concrete situations of the time. In Part Three we have the essays and lectures on some major aspects of Indian Politics dealing with the state of democratic rights in India and other extremely serious and live issues such as terrorism and reservation. On these issues his analysis and positions stand out conspicuously as distinct from not only familiar debates in the media, but also from the formulations by the mainstream left parties. This selection does not carry his magnum opus, the tome of thousand odd pages-Crisis of Socialism: Notes in Defence of a Commitment which is a detailed examination of the process of collapse of the Soviet Union and capitalist transformation of societies such as China where he presents sharp critiques of some of the policies these regimes pursued and puts out suggestions to read Marxist classics and historical developments with fresh understanding. That important work is not reproduced here mainly for reasons of space and the book in six parts is available separately also from Aakar Books. But the approach governing that analysis is very much there in this volume as well, especially in Part Two and Part Three. The publication of this volume was planned for presentation to him in his 95th year. But unfortunately he did not live to see that. Now we put it out in his memory. …

Hardcover. Zustand: New. People and land space signify all pervasive dimensions of geographic study. Population attributes represent expressive elements of necessary spatio-temporal events. These events, in turn, find manifestations best in rural-urban context. The apparent reality of population dynamics has remained the essential part of the most critical divide of rural versus urban. The authors have realised this contextual essence and provide an elaborate interpretation of spatio-temporal vision and reality of select demographic attributes in the book. The contents of the book mean comprehensive implications to educative and socio-economic planning endeavours.…
