Maharaja Ranjit Singh (1780-1893) popularly known as the Lion of the Panjab is, perhaps, the most outstanding figure in Panjab history. Because of his extraordinary qualities as a fighter, conqueror and an empire builder Ranjit Singh is often compared with Napoleon Bonaparte, Bismarck and Akbar. Rising from the position of the chief of one of the twelve Sikh confederacies in the eighteenth century Panjab, Ranjit Singh was the first Panjabi ruler who established a vast empire in north India, which extended from the Khybar pass in the North West, Sutlej in the East, deserts of Sind in the South and China and Tibet in the North. Because of his benevolent policies the Maharaja endeared himself to his subjects, a majority of whom were other than his co-religionists. Maharaja Ranjit Singh tries to capture the life and times of the Maharaja based on some of the hitherto inaccessible and unpublished material collected from various repositories in India, Pakistan and the United Kingdom.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. Though Sikhs follow several Punjabi marriage customs their marriage rites are performed through Anand Karaj. According to popular tradition the Anand form of marriage was popularised by Guru Ramdas the fourth Guru who composed the hymns called lavan for the purpose of solemnising Sikh weddings. The Anand form of marriage got legal sanction through the passage of the Anand marriage bill in the Imperial Legislative Council in 1909. After fixing a suitable match negotiations are finalised through a simple ceremony called roka which is performed in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib. Thereafter a suitable date for marriage is fixed. Generally a day before the marriage engagement and ring ceremonies are also performed. According to Sikh rehat maryada the Anand Karaj is supposed to be performed during a simple ceremony in the ambrosial hours after kirtan of Asa di Var. In actual practice however most of the Anand Karaj ceremonies are performed a little before lunch time. After offering ardaas the groom and the bride circumambulate the Guru Granth Sahib in a clockwise direction. This is done four times with the priest reading the lavan from the Guru Granth Sahib and the ragi jatha repeating each lavan set to music. The wedding ceremony concludes with the singing of first five and last stanzas of Anand followed by ardaas. Hukam is then taken by the granthi from the Guru Granth Sahib by opening it at random. Thereafter the congregation is served the Karah prasad with which a Sikh wedding is concluded. Through text based on Gurbani and popular tradition the book tries to capture the spirit of the Sikh wedding through colourful pictures of various ceremonies connected with the wedding. 96 pp.…

Founded by the ninth Guru, Tegh Bahadur, in AD 1664, the city came into prominence during the period of his son and successor, Guru Gobind Singh. Situated in the picturesque lower spurs of the Shivalik mountain ranges on the left bank of river Sutlej, the holy city is dotted by a number of historical gurdwaras. It was here that Guru Gobind Singh created the order of the Khalsa at Takhat Kesgarh, which is one of the five centres of Sikh temporal authority."Guru Gobind Singh protected the city by constructing a number of forts at strategic points, the most important of them being Kesgarh, Anandgarh, Lohgarh, Holgarh and Taragarh. It was at Anandpur that Guru Gobind Singh provided training to his followers in warfare and created special squads called the Nihangs, described as knight-errants of Guru Gobind Singh. "Though famous as the birthplace of the Khalsa, Anandpur is also know for its festivals, the most important of them being Hola Mahalla when the Nihangs take out huge processions and display their martial arts amidst the sprinkling of colours and beating of drums. The festival attracts thousands of visitors from different parts of the country and abroad. During the terecentenary of the creation of the Khalsa in 1999 over five millions pilgrims from all over world visited the holy city. An impressive Sikh heritage complex is being built at Anandpur which promises to be one of the wonders of the world." 96 pp.…

Because of its unique role in Sikh history and psyche, it has become the symbol of the Sikh community's undying faith and religious fervour. "The temple was designed by Guru Arjan Dev who chose to provide four doors, one in each direction, signifying its accessibility to people from all the four directions, irrespective of their caste or creed. The guru invited a well known Sufi Saint, Mian Mir of Lahore, to lay the foundation of the Golden Temple. The construction of the sacred tank and the temple was done through voluntary labour and cash contributions of devotees from far and near. "When Ranjit Singh became the Maharaja of Panjab, he commissioned well known artisans and craftsmen who decorated the temple with stone inlay work as well as beautiful floral patterns and covered the temple with gold-plated copper sheets. From then on it came to be known as the Golden Temple. This perhaps is the only temple in the world which was designed by the founder in such a way where the sanctum sanctorum floats like a lotus in the sacred tank. "Through pictures and stories the book tries to capture the glory and grandeur of the Golden Temple and the central role that the shrine plays in the life of the Sikhs all over the world." 96 pp.…
