Soft cover. Zustand: New. The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), passed by the Parliament of India in December 2019, promises citizenship to migrants of the 'Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi or Christian community from Afghanistan, Bangladesh or Pakistan'. By excluding Muslims from the list and not extending the promise to refugees from any of India's non-Muslim-majority neighbours, the CAA makes religion the basis of citizenship for the first time in the history of the Republic. Many fear that this Act, coupled with a countrywide National Register of Citizens (NRC), will eventually be used to disenfranchise India's Muslims, or to trap them in a permanent state of fear and insecurity, which has been the fate of millions of Bengali-origin Muslims of Assam. This Land Is Mine, I Am Not of This Land brings together a comprehensive selection of essays that deal with the theoretical, political and subjective aspects of this issue. The first section traces the evolution of citizenship in India. The following section deals with the peculiar case of Assam. Covered here are the bureaucratic travesties unleashed in the name of protecting the state from 'external aggression' as well as their sobering human cost. The concluding sections expose the superfluousness of the National Population Register (NPR), and pose serious questions on the constitutionality of the CAA. The book argues that with a key value like citizenship in question, it is not just the destinies of India's citizens but the very democratic foundation of the Republic that is at stake.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This is a book about the Kashmir valley-lacerated, wrathful, aflame. The authors travelled across it in the winter of 2016, during a journey undertaken in a spirit of solidarity with the people of the region. It is a disturbing account of children blinded by pellet guns, of a government in a bitter state of undeclared war with its own civilian populations, of the rage of stone-throwing youth and the hubris of military generals. The book also attempts a concise history of the conflict in the valley and makes a strong plea for humanity, for fairness, and for justice. The authors argue, there should be no denying a just peace to the embattled people of the valley. The concluding words of the book sum it up precisely: 'We are told that a nation cannot be strong if it is ethical or compassionate; that these are despicable signs of weakness; that a strong state is a state that is without morality or mercy. Who will tell them how wrong they are? That it is only the weak who fell those who are weaker, whose hearts are empty of mercy, who celebrate the weeping of children. The truly strong are those who have the courage to be kind and just.'.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Taking the readers on an insightful journey through 75 pivotal moments that have shaped India's foreign policy since 1947, Power and Purpose: Rediscovering Indian Foreign Policy in Amrit Kaal serves not only as a valuable resource for academic research but also as an accessible guide for the general public. It offers objective and succinct analyses of key events in India's foreign policy landscape. The analyses are provided through a periodization of four wavesit starts with the era of state building and the Nehruvian outlook, followed by a period of regional consolidation and antagonisms; the third wave navigates through a phase when India was just opening up to the world, paving the way for transformative progress that has led it to its fourth and current wave, setting India on the path to global leadership. This journey from the past to the present fulfils two other purposes. First, it aims to provide the reader with objective insights into what created and shaped contemporary Indian foreign policy. This fuels its second purpose, wherein it aims to provide a window into contemporary foreign policy for future analysts to broadly understand how Indian foreign policy was perceived 75 years post its Independence, as it entered the next phase of Amrit Kaal. This will be possible by analyzing the biases behind the curation of events this book has collated through its presentism, as many events may lose their significance in the years to come, while others may grow in their relevance. These variances will essentially represent the delta between contemporary Indian foreign policy and its subsequent formulations at infinite points of time in the future. Whether you are a student, a researcher, or simply curious about India's role on the global stage, this book invites you to explore the complexities of Indian foreign policy and reflect on the lasting impact of historical decisions on our collective future.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Pakistan Military has used the mantle of being the custodian of 'Nazariya-e-Pakistan' (idea of Pakistan) as causa principalis to permeate into the societal fabric of Pakistan and impose its strategic culture on Pakistan, the state. While externally it may be revisionist, internally Pakistan Military would prefer to maintain status quo ante. This book is a critique on Pakistan's military dominance and how the army's grip on national ideology, politics and society has persisted. Pakistan Military has shaped a revisionist, anti-India posture by manipulating the feudal elite, the political satraps, theological cronies, the judiciary and the bureaucrats through a 'carrot and stick' regimen by the Deep State. The Pakistan Military today controls the trajectory of Pakistan and cleaving the strategic culture of the state from that of the military is virtually impossible. The revisionist mindset of Pakistan is a direct manifestation of this confluence, wherein despite the internal fractures and fluctuations, Pakistan's inimical posture to India has remained a constant. Pakistan Military's 'numero uno' status took a hit on 09 May 23 with the riots targeting the military establishment, heralding the 'fall from grace'. The cleaving of the military from the people is a 'strategic shock' second only to the creation of Bangladesh. As internal dissent grows and its hold weakens, the book examines the strategic implications for South Asia and proposes a multi-dimensional response to unhinge the military's central role in Pakistan's trajectory.
