Hard bound. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near fine. First Edition. In 1790, Badon Min, the sorcerer-king of Myanmar (Burma) embarked on a project to create the Mingun pagoda, which, if completed would have been higher than the Great Pyramid in Egypt. This tyrant and his sycophantic court inhabited an exotic and rigorously feudal world: Mi, the City of Immortals, where glittering ceremonials were a way of life. But beneath this ostensibly benign exterior lurked a nightmarish realm of sorcery, spells and death by ceremonial drowning. Adopted Hindu gods and indigenous spirits dominated the lives of everyone. The spin-doctors at court were unsurpassed, and spun fabulous tales regarding their Master of the Celestial Weapon who 'like unto the kings of the universe who governed the four great islands of the solar system were versed in charms and spells of fourteen descriptions.' And despite being the son of a peasant, he claimed descent from the Emperor Asoka of India no less. So deluded was he by his cronies in the occult arts, he even declared himself to be Maitreya the Merciful Buddha. Yet over a period of thirty-seven years, he was responsible for the death of thousands. Despite this some authors still portray him as an unblemished and oh-so-pious being. The author has delved into previously unavailable indigenous records and contemporary foreign accounts to produce a warts and all portrait of Badon Min, his achievements, murderous indiscretions and failures. And in the process has uncovered sex scandals and vital evidence that the impossibly ambitious Mingun project was never completed. The text is enriched with many illustrations by the author, together with other rare unpublished material, which brings to life the colorful reign of this extraordinarily volatile man and the personalities, who came into contact with him. 285 pp., illustrated, with 23 pp. illus. in col., 1 map. Slight shelfware; otherwise a new/unread copy. Size: 25 x 19 cm.

[MS] I was so glad you were able to be there even if it was a bit 'last-minute-ish' | MS] Yours | Noel". WITH: Original Programme, bifolium, good condition. On verso, a brief note in another hand "Nice - & I thought might amuse you -". Note: "Sigh No More is a musical revue consisting of twenty-two scenes and numbers composed, written and produced by Noël Coward, with additional items by Joyce Grenfell, Richard Addinsell and Norman Hackforth. The show was Coward's first post-World War II musical and starred Cyril Ritchard, his wife Madge Elliott and Joyce Grenfell. It also featured Graham Payn, Coward's longtime partner, who sang the best-known song in the show, the wistful "Matelot". It opened at the Manchester Opera House on 11 July 1945, before transferring to London's West End, where it opened at the Piccadilly Theatre on 22 August 1945, running for 213 performances and closing on 23 February 1946. Despite its indifferent success, it contained songs that endured in Coward's later cabaret act and elsewhere." (Wikipedia). SEE IMAGE>.

In den WarenkorbSee her entry in the Oxford DNB. After a stint as one of George Edwardes' Gaiety Girls, she made her name in a number of revues, her performance in the lead role of the 1929 Broadway production of 'Bitter Sweet' prompting Coward to praise her "grace and charm and assurance", which he said provoked "one of the most prolonged outbursts of cheering I have ever heard in the theatre". She was less successful in Hollywood, starring in the Romberg/Hammerstein musical 'One Heavenly Night' (1931), a failure for Samuel Goldwyn. Signed in ink 'Evelyn Laye', on an 11.5 x 20 cm piece of laid paper, over the legs of a pencil sketch full-length portrait of her, competently-executed with in fifties style with slightly oversized head, by Kenneth Sephton. It was Sephton's habit to present his drawings to the subjects for signature (see the signed sketch of Deborah Kerr, offered separately), thus gaining some manner of endorsement. On aged, worn and lightly-creased paper, with central horizontal fold, with 3 cm closed tear from the left (not reaching the drawing or signature). From the Kenneth Sephton archive. See Image.
