Produced shortly after the conclusion of the siege, this print reflects the 19th-century demand for visual records of contemporary military events. Lithography allowed publishers to circulate detailed representations of major conflicts to a broad audience, while hand coloring enhanced both the documentary value and visual appeal of these historical images. A BATTLE THAT CAPTURED THE VICTORIAN IMAGINATION. The Siege of Sevastopol was the culminating military struggle of the Crimean War. The fortified port served as the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet and its capture represented a major strategic victory for the allied British, French, and Ottoman forces. The prolonged siege, lasting from October 1854 until September 1855, became one of the defining military events of the Victorian era and was widely commemorated in prints, illustrated publications, and historical accounts. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Hand-colored lithograph on heavy stock. Image area approximately 15.75 x 9 inches; sheet size approximately 20 x 12.5 inches. Folded as issued. Title and descriptive key printed below image. CONDITION: Fair. The print has been professionally repaired on the blank verso along approximately the lower 5 inches of the central fold. Age toning and soiling present, with darker discoloration along several upper folds. Some foxing in the upper third of the sheet. Image remains clear with original hand coloring preserved. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: the struggle for Russia's Black Sea stronghold The Siege of Sevastopol was one of the most significant military engagements of the 19th century and a turning point in European power politics.
