These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mou…nted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a portrait of Sir John Sinclair, Bart, with the caption "a Poet" with accompanying biographical details. Il est orné d'un signet-tartan aux couleurs de Jean George - couverture légère…ment poussiéreuse sinon bon état - "Ce mastodonte n'était pas en vente, mais offert aux membres de l'Académie française, aux rédacteurs des quotidiens francophones et "aux personnes que je crois amies de la littérature et surtout de la poésie".Il est dédié "aux sympathiques Dames Françaises".En tout quelque sept mille vers, poésies originales de l'auteur, en français ou en anglais, ou traductions réciproques d'auteurs français et anglais. Quelques considérations de critiques littéraires ("Mérimée est laid come un satyre, dur, sensuel et mesquin"), souvenirs sur Byron, extraits de Max Nordau, long fragment de Thackeray en traduction, études de prosodie, etc.Les illustrations donnent à voir des portraits et des châteaux de famille ainsi que des oeuvres d'art, certaines retouchées et améliorées, sur instructions de Sir Tollemache. L'ouvrage donne aussi la liste de "la crème de la crème" des centaines de disques aimés par l'auteur.Sir John George Tollemache Sinclair (1825-1912), affiche aussi dans cette somme, son goût pour les listes et l'énumération. On trouve ainsi une liste des "infractions des règles prosodiques de Boileau", celle de "quelques personnes dont les noms se trouvent dans les biographies générales et qui ont été malheureuses dans leur mariage", la liste des "personnes d'importance qui ne se sont jamais mariées", ou celle des "personnes d'importance qui se sont suicidées", mais plus longue que celle des candidats au suicide qui en sont réchappés, parmi lesquels, dit-il, Chateaubriand, Napoléon, George Sand et Saint-Simon (le socialiste), ou encore la "liste des personnes connues qui ont exprimé des opinions défavorables sur les oeuvres de Shakespeare, ou qui les ont corrigées" Livres.
