This American volume marks the first book-from publication of Simposon's essays and speeches, and thus represents his… first full-dress exposition of the use of anaesthesia in childbirth and major surgery. The collection was never published in book form in England. While searching for an anesthetic less irritating than ether, Simposn discovered the advantages of chloroform, and was the first to apply it as a painkiller during labor and childbirth. Simpson first used chloroform in an obsterical case on Nov. 7. 1847, when he administered it to a woman with a previous history of difficult labor; the baby was born without complications about twenty-five minute after the first inhalation. Simpson reproted his sucess in an adress deliverd at the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Edinburgh on 10 November, and immediately afterwards publishend his adress. In spites of Simpson's sucess with chloroform, he encountered a great deal of opposition from conservative doctors and clergymen, who considered labor pains a God-given punishment for Eva's sins, and he embarked on a long publishing campaign to convert the opposition. His most famous non-scientific argument was that God Himself had been the first anesthetis when He "caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam" before bringing forth Eve from his rib (Genesis II:21). Simpson's efforts were finally accepted by the medicl establsihment when Queen Victoria chose to take chlorofrom for the irth of Prince Leopold in 1853. see - Lilly, p. 201; Simpson, pp.125-135; See GM 5657; Duncum, pp.166-181; Keys, pp.32-35.

Juni 1811 zu Bathgate (Linlithgowshire), war anfänglich Lehrling seines Vaters, eines Bäckers, bereitete sich aber selbst zu höheren Studien vor, konnte mit Hilfe seines älteren Bruders und eines Stipendiums seit 1827 sich dem Studium der Med. in Edinburg widmen, wurde 1830 Lic. des R. C. S. Edinb., praktizierte kurze Zeit in dem Dorfe Inverkop am Clyde, wurde 1832 Doktor und von dem Prof. der Pathol. John Thomson zu seinem Vorlesungs-Assistenten, sowie von der (die Elite der älteren Studenten und jüngeren Ärzte umfassenden) Royal Med. Soc. zum Präsidenten erwählt. Bald darauf wurde er Dozent der Geburtshilfe an der extra-akad. Schule. 1840 erhielt er, erst 29 Jahre alt, nach hartem Kampfe den durch den Tod von Hamilton erledigten Lehrstuhl der Geburtshilfe und wurden nunmehr die Vorträge über dieselbe, die bisher etwas vernachlässigt worden waren, die gesuchtesten an der ganzen Univ. S.'s wachsende Popularität als Arzt hielt damit gleichen Schritt, wie sich das bei seiner Persönlichkeit, in der sich männliche Kraft mit weiblicher Zartheit in bewundernswerter Weise vereinigten, leicht erklärt. Seine Praxis nahm Dimensionen an, die ins Enorme gingen. Nach der von Morton (1846) zuerst ausgeführten Ätherisierung eines Pat. behufs Zahn-Extraktion war S. der erste, welcher dieselbe (1847) auch bei einer Entbindung anwendete und nach längerem Experimentieren die Vorzüge des Chloroforms vor dem Äther entdeckte. Er machte zum ersten Male (1847) von demselben bei einer Entbindung Gebrauch und legte der Edinb. Med.-Chir. Soc. bald darauf seine segensreiche Entdeckung vor, die 4 Tage später publiziert wurde, musste dieselbe aber in der Folge wiederholt gegen manche Widersacher, darunter auch theologische, und unter den Ärzten namentl. gegen Jacob Bigelow (1870) noch fast auf dem Sterbebette verteidigen. Sein Hauptwerk über diesen Gegenstand war: "Anaesthesia; or, the employment of chloroform and ether in surgery, midwifery, etc." (1849). 1848 schrieb er u.a.: "On the attitude and positions of the foetus in utero", über "Medicated pessaries", über "Retroversion of the unimpregnated uterus", sowie über eine seiner Ansicht nach erforderliche Umwälzung des geltenden Hosp.-Systems durch Errichtung von Dorf- oder Pavillon-Hosp., und begann damit eine Agitation, die noch zu verschiedenen Aufsätzen Anlass gab (vergl. die ältere Quelle). 1849 wurde er zum Präsidenten des Roy. Coll. of Physic., 1852 der Edinb. Roy. Med.-Chir. Soc., 1853 zum auswärt. Mitgliede der französ. Acad. de méd. erwählt und erhielt 1856 von der Acad. des sc. die goldene Medaille und einen Monthyon-Preis von 2000 Frcs., publizierte 1853 die 3. Aufl. eines Buches über: "Homoeopathy, its tenets and tendencies, theoretical, theological, and therapeutical" und in steigender Proportion eine immer grössere Zahl von Aufsätzen und Mitteilungen. Auch erschienen in dieser Zeit seine bis dahin zerstreut publizierten Abhandlungen, gesammelt als: "The obstetric memoirs and contributions edited by Priestley and Storer" (2. voll., Edinb. 1855 bis 56). In das Jahr 1858 fallen seine ersten Publikationen über die von ihm mit Metall-Suturen an Tieren gemachten Experimente; dazu gehört ein Brief über: "Iron-thread sutures and splints in vesico-vaginal fistulae" - "Treatment of hydrocele by iron-wire seton".
