Degenen, voor wie ik vooral geschreven heb, zijn zij, die, gewapend met eenige kennis van de H. Schrift en de zich daromheen groepeerende geschied van het oude Oosten, zich wenschen te orienteeren omtrent omvang en beteekenis der bijbelsch-palestijnsche opgravingen. Voor hen hoop ik, zonder mij al te zeer te beperken tot algemeenheden die geen nut hebben, toch iets te hebben geschreven, dat leesbaar is. Zelfs eenige min of meer technische uitweidingen heb ik met opzet niet altid vermeden, want zonder tenminste eenige kennis van de practische aspecten der opgravingen schijnt het mij niet mogelijk, dat de lezer zich zelfs maar een benaderend begrip zou kunnen vormen van de beteekenis en den graad van betrouwbaarheid der archeologi- sche vondsten. In denzelfden geest heb ik tallooze passages ver- gezeld doen gaan van een literatuuropgave, terwijl een lijst der voornaamste werken ook aan het einde van dit boek werd samen- gesteld. Wellicht zal de een of ander, die door zijn bijbelsche studies voor den drempel staat van het archeologische paradijs, hierin het middel vinden om de poort daartoe te openen. Bij de vondsten, waarvan men de officieele beschrijving steeds kan vin- den in de reeds gepubliceerde, officieele rapporten, heb ik in den regel daarheen niet verwezen, daar men alle inlichtingen daarom- trent gemakkelijk in deze rapporten kan vinden. Bij de algemeene bespreking der opgravingen (hfdst. II, IlI en IV) heb ik deze rapporten steeds vermeld. Bij de samenstelling van dit boek heb ik mij beperkt tot het over- zicht van geschiedenis en resultaten der palestijnsche opgravingen, voor zoover deze betrekking hebben op de eeuwen voor de bal- lingschap van het Uitverkoren Volk, zonder mij evenel te ver- bieden hier en daar ook aan de andere zijde van deze tijdgrens een stap te zetten, waar de aard van het behandelde onderwerp of de samenhang der vondsten dit meebracht. Dat het jaar der groote ballingschap (586 v. Chr.) de meest was natuurlijke grenspaal voor mijn verhandeling, za eenieder beamen, die de culture en godsdienstige metamorphose voor den geest heeft, welke het volk der Hebreeén in de halve eeuw van zijn groote kastijding.
