Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Gordon, Toby (illustrator). 1st Edition. Near fine condition. The textured blue-gray wrappers remain clean and crisp, showing only some sunning along the spine and upper edge, a common trait of the paper stock used by Coffee House Press in the 1980s. The interior pages are bright, unmarked, and beautifully printed on Strathmore paper. The binding is tight, the signatures sound, and the printed surfaces unmarred by handling. The limitation leaf, signed in black ink by both Simon Schuchat and Toby Gordon, is fresh and sharply impressed. Overall, this is a well-kept and carefully stored example of one of Coffee House's early fine-press chapbooks, showing only faint traces of age. Light dealer pencil markings on flyleaf, easily erasable. A finely printed chapbook pairing Simon Schuchat's meditative, image-rich poems with a suite of woodcuts by Toby Gordon. Issued in 1987 by Coffee House Press as part of its Visiting Press series at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, the volume exemplifies the tactile elegance of the press's early hand-printed work. Handset in Centaur type by Margery Cantor and designed by Allan Kornblum, the book was printed by Kent Aldrich on a hand-fed Chandler & Price platen press, using heavyweight papers. The cover features Gordon's striking turquoise woodcut of mountains and fields, echoed in a matching interior plate facing Schuchat's title poem, "To a Farmer." Limited to 400 numbered copies, each signed by both author and artist (this being No. 241), At Baoshan reflects the union of American small-press craft and poetic imagination in the late twentieth century?an artifact as much of fine printing as of lyric art. Inscribed by Author(s).
