A handsome set. $250. * Also known as the Simon Commission after its chair Sir John Simon, the Indian Statutory Commission was a group of seven members of the British parliament tasked with assessing the impact of prior constitutional reforms in British India and making further proposals. Clement Atlee, then a Labour MP, served on the commission; as Prime Minister, he would oversee the Partition of India and the end of the British Raj in 1947. No Indians were appointed. The commission ultimately proposed a limited expansion of representative government in the provinces that would allow British governors to retain most of their existing power. Its report was published in two volumes with an additional 15 volumes of supplementary material.
