It featured Critical Mass II, a group of sixty life-sized iron figures in various poses, arranged to evoke both harmony and disquiet. The works were placed throughout the museum and gardens, engaging in visual dialogue with Rodin s sculptures. Contemporain de Stendhal et de Mérimée, il fut l une des figures les plus attachantes de l époque romantique ; ses écrits sont d une grande qualité. Cette édition comporte 129 lettres inédites, plus un fragment en prose intitulé : « Dialogue véritable » et un « Registre de correspondance » (mémento trouvé dans les papiers de l auteur), in-fine du tome second. Contemporary French dark red polished calf, covers scuffed spine darkened and a little worn at head and tail, corners bumped, but an a…ttractive binding, perfectly sound and completely unsophisticated. With faults, and priced correctly. Late Empire binding by Rene Simier (1772-1843) of restrained elegance, exhibiting his unsurpassed technical ability. In the nineteenth century, Simier "pere" - with Joseph Thouvenin - brought the art of French bookbinding to its apogee. In his long and distinguished career Simier was appointed binders to Empress Marie-Louise, Louis XVIII, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicily (subsequently Duchesse de Berry). According to Ramsden ("French Bookbinders 1789-1848") Simier's "variety and technique were superb; he had no superior and few rivals during his career." Our binding is signed at the foot of the spine the the requisite "Simier R[elieur] du Roi." While there were a number of binders named Simier in the nineteenth century, Rene Simier "pere" was the only one who was appointed Relieur du Roi. On front free endpaper a printed label from the library of Meron=Allen gives references to Willems, 1353, Suppl., 358, Berghman, 319 and Rahir, 1404."The abbey (Cistercian nuns) was established in 1204, but became famous when its discipline was reformed in 1609 by its abbess, Mother Marie Angelique Arnauld (1591-1661). The Arnauld family became its patrons and the abbey's subsequent history was directed by a number of the members of that family. In 1625 most of the nuns moved to a new Port-Royal in Paris, which subsequently became Port-Royal de Paris (or, more commonly, Port-Royal) while the older one was known as Port-Royal des Champs ("Port-Royal of the fields"). Large 4to., 34 x 26cm, [10] 148pp (with 3 copies of each plate additionally interleaved) [4], [13] plates. Finely bound by Yseux Sr. de Thierry-Simier in full black crushed goatskin, covers with three sided panel formed of interlaced gilt circles, spine in gilt panels with continued circle design and onlay face after Chimot, lettered in gilt, t.e.g., turn-ins with 7 gilt rules, with binders signature stamp to upper turn-in, front board with recessed original copperplate, floral silk endpapers, with goatskin edged marbled paper slipcase. Paris, Société Nouvelle des Éditions d'Art Devambez. Very good, binding fine, light to moderate foxing throughout. Appointed as artistic director of Les Éditions d?Art Devambez in 1923, Édouard Chimot (1880 - 1958) was at the forefront of the vogue for extravagantly produced livres d?art and livres d?artiste which gripped Paris throughout the 1920s. His own style of late-Symbolist nudes was characterised by depictions of those who were "subject to their deadly and delicious passions? (André Warnod), and he felt a particular affinity for Decadent authors such as Baudelaire and Verlaine, whose haunting texts his etchings so fittingly illustrated. The Wall Street crash of 1929 proved that life imitated art and the passion for collecting expensive limited editions proved to be a deadly one. The market for luxury books collapsed, and the publication of Parallelement in 1931 was the end of Éditions d?Art Devambez; the last gasp of the roaring twenties. Chimot never regained his position in the Parisian artistic and literary world. While his work slowly declined into puerile erotica, his place at the height of the glamorous world of Parisian publishing was almost entirely forgotten.

Qq infimes traces d'usage, mais superbe exemplaire. Georges Onslow (1784 - 1853) compositeur français de descendence anglaise. Le colporteur est son deuxième opéra. Cet exemplaire dans une reliure somptueuse exécutée par René Simier (1772 - 1843) relieur des rois Charles X et Louis-Philippe est l'exemplaire de la duchesse de Berry, celui qui recevoit la dédicace de cet ouvrage par le compositeur. La duchesse, née en 1798 à Caserte (Italie) était marié avec le second fils du roi Charles X : Charles-Ferdinand d'Artois duc de Berry. Elle jouait un rôle important dans la restoration des Bourbons en France.
