In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. 4to (200x144 mm). 40, [4: index] pp. Woodcut arms of the city of Lucca on the title page. Woodcut initial, head- and tail-piece. Contemporary grey wrappers. Volume slightly loose, lacking a portion of the lower outer corner of pp. 25/26 not affecting the text, all in all a very good, genuine copy.Rare first edition of the statutes and regulations of the guild of goldsmiths and silversmiths of the Republic of Lucca. The 65 articles regulate the admission to the guild, the election of the consuls, the assemblies, the procedure for becoming a master, the workers' acitivity, the standards of gold and silver, the prohibition of working from home or behind closed doors in the store, the proportion of gold to stone in rings, the obligation to mark all gold and silver production with the author's emblem, the fees payable to the mint for approval, the consuls' inspections of stores, the fines and punishments, the licences, and so on. The final two pages list the fees for having gold and silver objects evaluated and authenticated.?As the regulation of [gold-plated and silver-plated items] fell within the competence of the Guild of Goldsmiths, chapters of the same content were included also in the statutes that regulated the life of this institution into the Early Modern period and beyond [. . .] In order to protect consumers from this kind of fraud, the statutes of almost all Guilds of Goldsmiths outlawed the selling of gold that did not respect legally-established purity standards. In many early modern statutes the standards appeared to be established by the Guild itself, as part of its duty of control on the materials used by its members [. . .] A similar provision from the 1743 statute of the Guild of the Goldsmiths and the Silversmiths of Lucca in the same way prescribed that metal products could be gold-plated or silver-plated only making sure that the original material was still visible in some part of the object. Only one kind of product could be gilded in its entirety, without leaving any space uncovered: the sacred vessels used for the Catholic mass? (F. Boldrini, All That Glitters Is Not Gold: False Jewellery and Its Juridical Regulation in Italy between the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period, in: ?Faking It! In den Warenkorb4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded twice. For information regarding this renowned firm of silversmiths, which possessed the royal warrant and mounted a sumptuous display at the Great Exhibition, see Norman Mosley Penzer, 'Paul Storr, 1771-1844, Silversmith and Goldsmith' (1954), and John Culme, 'Directory of Gold and Silversmiths' (2000). The nature of the '"Australian" implement' which is the subject of the letter is unclear, but information on Hunt's partner's connection with Australia is to be found in L. W. Dimmick, 'London to Lismore: The Roskell Family in Australia' (2006). The letter begins: 'My dear Sir, | I asked Mr. Roskell some time ago about the stone implement which he brought from Australia. He asked me to describe it to you generally as having been found in the colony. As he told me that he had found it himself I asked for the exact place but he appeared disinclined to tell me, therefore please to treat it as an "Australian" implement.' Hunt will endeavour to obtain some of the items for the recipient's 'loan to the Soc of Antiquaries', and he has asked 'a cousin of mine', who has 'some from the northeast of Ireland', to lend them as well. Employing an appropriate metaphor, he expessess regret that 'your cloud has not yet shown its silver lining'. He also notes the recipient's 'anxiety'. He has himself 'seen nothing good lately and the earth seems to produce nothing but wars and Communions: the latter, I am almost glad to say, consigned to it again'. He 'took the liberty of using a small piece of Danish gold you kindly lent me once as a text for a sermon which you will find in a small contribution of our's to the Exhibition'. He ends in the hope that the recipient 'will soon meet with a happy solution of all your difficulties'. …

In den WarenkorbA careful photographic record of an extremely important silver collection, magnificently bound in full red elaborately gilt morocco by Ed. Berck, Paris. 62 professional photographs, 8x10" black & whites, possibly recorded for insurance purposes, mounted in plastic sleeves, with a description of the items, maker and date on the opposite page. The owners of this important collection are unknown, indicated only by the gilt letters "I.W." on the front cover, and the engraved "C.P.W." on the vanity set photograph. The striking thing about the collection is the quality & early date of the pieces. There are four pieces by the famed Huguenot silversmith, Paul Lamerie (silver mirror 1745; 3 silver shells 1724; tea kettle & stand 1731; cake basket 1734.) There are no less than five pieces from the Queen Anne period (silver tea kettle & stand, 1708 by Lewis Mettayer; teapot 1714 by Humphrey Payne; coffee pot 1709 by Edward Pearce; tea caddy 1712 by Richard Watts; silver gilt cake tazza 1712 by David Willaume.) There are many George I pieces, including a rare set of 4 candlesticks by Edward Pearce dated 1720. The bulk of the collection is George II, with some George III pieces. The silver encompasses the full range of a households' necessities & trivialities - a mirror, silver shells, tea kettles, cake basket, coffee pots, tea caddies, brandy saucepan, tea strainer, cream pitchers, sugar tongs, bowls & covers, a ewer, covered entree dishes, sauceboats, a cake tazza, sugar castors, a candle snuffer & stand, spoon trays, candle sticks, salt cellars and spoons, pepper pots, waiters, meat platters, tea trays, set of 12 silver plates, basting spoon, salad servers, pie server, asparagus tongs, butter spades, sauce ladles, skewers, dessert & dinner flatware & spirit labels. The only two later pieces, which look to be ca. 1910-20, are a vanity set & hip flask. Thankfully, those are the only ones which appear to be monogrammed by the owners. A handsome contemporary record of an outstanding silver collection, many pieces of which by now are probably held in museums. Oblong 4to, 9 1/4 x 13", red gilt morocco, with slipcase (red morocco foredge, marbled paper boards).…
