A former owner of this volume, Philippe Garigue, was a political scientist and professor born in Manchester, England in 1913 and died in 2008 in Toronto. He was Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Montreal and later Principal of Glendon College in Toronto. 1100 copies for sale in England by The Nonesuch Press and 500 copies for sale in the US by Random House. The editor, Geoffrey Kenyes' copy, with his signature to the edition statement. The first edition, thus of this work. Limited edition, number 248 of 1600 copies. Signe…d by the editor, Geoffrey Keynes, to the edition statement. This copy has been printed by R and R Clark in Edinburgh, the copperplate engravings by A Alexander and Son in London. The drawings have been colour-stencilled by the Curwen Press. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. In doing so, books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices.'The Compleat Angler' is Izaak Walton's best known work. It was edited and expanded by Walton for over a quarter of a century. The work is a celebration of fishing through prose and verse.The second part of this work is written by Walton's friend and fellow angler, Charles Cotton.In the original slipcase. A very bright copy of this work. In the original crushed morocco binding. With original slipcase. Externally, excellent with the occasional handling mark to the boards.
