The classic early book on diving and its history and practice.Written by the son of August Siebe, a German-born artillery officer who had moved to London following the Napoleonic wars and pursued a career in engineer…ing. It was this elder Siebe who devised the standard and familiar diving apparatus of detachable helmet and canvas suit, and who, in partnership with his son-in-law, founded the firm whose name became internationally synonymous with diving equipment, Siebe Gorman. The book is bound in full leather, probably a prize binding with the Royal gilt coat of arms on front board and all edges gilt. The spine has raised bands with gilding and a neat black title label. The endpapers are marbled and the book is clean and tight without marks of signatures. No foxing. The marbled boards on the front pastedown are a little faded as if a label may have been removed and there is a corner chipped from one of the preliminaries. Still a VG+ copy of this diving classic.
