Clean and tightly bound in navy blue cloth with gilt titles and designs. A slant to the spine and some minor lifting to the binding cloth. The contents include two Very Good maps bound in. The map in front has a 1" chip and some splits to the folds. This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York City. There are no external indications of the library's ownership. A handwritten number and Mercantile Library stamp are on the title page and some of the internal pages. First edition. 8vo, viii, 225, [iii] pp., original brown cloth gilt, housed in a blue cloth slipcase. A fine copy. Ensor was engaged in the survey of Wady Milkh or the Inalienable Valley for the proposed line of a railway to Darfoor. Since the reign of Achmat Bokr, Sultan of Darfoor 1682-1722, the Sultans had claimed sole right to use this route, which was anyway regarded as unsafe. This is an account of the adventures the author met on his journey from the second cataract of the Nile, and afterwards at El Fasher, with a description of the country.
