This work describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life, gives rules of conduct, model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. It was perhaps the most popular of all his writings. In Five Books (single binding): Books I and II consist of chapters usually (but not consistently) alternating between Thomas Fuller's thoughts and beliefs as to what consists of "The Good Husband", "The Good Wife", "The Constant Virgin"; "The Elder Brother"; "The Good Physician"; "The Good Souldier"; "The Good Sea Captain";The Generall Artist; The Good Schoolmaster; The Good Yeoman; The Good Servant" etc.etc. with biographies of specific individuals in between these general chapters, eg., Lady Paula; Hildegarde of Bingen, Paracelsus; Sir Francis Drake; Joan of Arc; Queen Elizabeth; William Cambden, etc. Book III, subtitled: "Containing Generall Rules", delves into Hospitality, Jesting, Traveling, Apparel, Anger, Natural Fools, Marriage, Fame, etc. etc. At the Conclusion of Book III, Fuller notes: "To The Reader. These General Rules we have placed in the middle, that the Books on both sides may equally reach to them, because all Persons therein, are indifferently concerned." In Book IV, Fuller continues his (roughly) alternating chapters in which he addresses ideal characters -- "The Favourite"; The Wise Statesman"; "The Court Lady"; Book V has its own titlepage.: "The Profane State", with continuous pagination. Thomas Fuller (1608-1661) . Cambridge: Printed by Roger Daniel for John Williams . 1648 (with printer's device, seal of Cambridge University). Head- and tail-pieces and initials. Illustrated from engraved portraits. Instructive lives, all in Fuller's lively and readable style. It has been written that Fuller was known as "a perfect walking library". Coleridge wrote: "Wit.was the stuff and substance of Fuller's intellect.".

1p., 8vo. Bifolium. Twenty-seven lines of text. Good, on aged paper, with minor traces of previous mounting. Addressed, with black ink circular postmark ('20 | NO'), on reverse of second leaf, ''To Mr Ellis | att Mr Taverners in Thread-needle Street'. The letter begins: 'Nothing can yield Persons in our Stations greater Satisfac…tion, than to be entertain'd in our silent Retirement with some harmless amusements from a facetious & learned Correspondent. for without these while we were endeavouring with ye uttmost Diligence, to know ye World, as some People please to call it, we shouldn't att last know whether wee were in it or not; But like ye People that never go beyond ye Smoak of ye Town Chimneys, stare att every thing wee see, & imagine ye Rest of Mankinde to be a new Creation.' He explains that he has resolved to 'preserve a Correspondence with those I knew before', and to 'form a new one with those whose extensive Character only made 'em known to me'. He hopes to pay Ellis 'in Current Coin; which I hope you will comply with, & speedily lay your demands on' Murdin. Between 1740 and 1759 Murdin published his valuable 'Collection of State Papers relating to affairs in the reign of Elizabeth from 1571 to 1596: transcribed from original papers and other authentic memorials left by W. Cecill Lord Burghley, and reposited in the library at Hatfield House.' Johnson stated, in Boswell's Life, that the 'most literary conversation' he ever enjoyed was at the table of 'Jack Ellis, a money scrivener behind the Royal Exchange', at whose house he at one point dined twice a week.

An interesting collection of Cambridge ephemera, dating from a period of considerable economic and social turbulence. The twenty-two items are in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. They include six term accounts, with Brett-James's details typewritten on printed forms, signed by tutors D. Thomson and B. T. D. Smith. These ac…counts are itemised, with details of domestic charges. Affixed to all but one of these accounts are official College receipts signed by tutors. Also present is an Autograph Note to Brett-James from the College clerk R. S. Mason, on his letterhead, 22 July 1946; a bill from Bell & Lunn's Travel Service, 6 King's Parade, Cambridge; and eight leaves of autograph accounts by Brett-James, totalling 5pp., 8vo; and 7pp., 12mo; in which he gives the names and prices of books and magazines, with the cost of other items from a 'sherry bottle' to 'packet of paper' and 'toothpaste'. Before matriculating, Brett-James had served in the Second World War in the Middle East, India and the Far East with the 5th Indian Division Signals (whose company history he wrote). On leaving Sidney Sussex College in 1947, he worked in publishing until 1961, when he took up a position as Lecturer (and later Senior Lecturer) in Military History at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. His final posts at the Academy were as Deputy Head, 1968-9, and Head, 1970-80, of the War Studies and International Affairs Department.
