Dr. Shute was a member of the Convention which formed the Constitution of Massachusetts, and served as a member of the convention that ratified the U.S. Constitution in 1788. He received the degree of D.D. from Harvard College in 1790, and relinquished public labors in 1799, having discharged the duties of pastor for a period of fifty-six years. The inscription on the half title reads: "Caleb Fuller's / The Gift of the Author." Rev. Caleb Fuller (1735-1815), who lived in Middleton (Connecticut) and Hanover (New Hampshire), and who served as Deacon of the College Church at Dartmouth College. This sermon was delivered during a period of intense friction between British colonial authorities and Massachusetts colonists, right around the time occupying British troops were being requested and resistance to the Townshend Acts was mounting. Shute's address pointedly discusses civil liberties, governance, and the mutual duties of rulers and the ruled, famously noting that political happiness relies on just governance and the voluntary participation of society. First Edition, with misprinted date to title page.…

In den WarenkorbStitched Pamphlet. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Election sermon. Sewn as issued. Octavo, 8.75 in. x 5.5 in., pp. [5], 6-70, [2]. Printer's copyright error to title page. With errata on p. 70. Original wraps with "Mr. Shute's Election-Sermon, May 25. 1768." to half title. Fore-edge of pages lightly curled. Number "17" in ink in upper right corner of half-title, number 54 in lower right. Previous owner's name in ink to top of half title. Two square inch open tear and a bit of wrinkling to rear blank. Embossed impression of Historical Genealogical Society on title page. Light age-toning. Very clean pages (one spot to p. 19/20). Printer Richard Draper made a major typographical error on the title page of the first printing of this 1768 pamphlet. The Roman numerals for the year were printed as MDCCXLVIII (1748) instead of MDCCLXVIII (1768). Subsequent editions were corrected. Evans 11071. Sabin 80802. He received the degree of D.D. from Harvard College in 1790, and relinquished public labors in 1799 having discharged the duties of pastor for a period of fifty-six years. The previous owner was "Rev. Mr Croswell"; that is, Reverend Andrew Croswell (1709-1785), the minister of a small Boston Church, and a fiery Congregational "New Light" minister associated with the First Great Awakening. He was known for his fierce defense of emotional conversion experiences and active participation in Boston's public theological debates. This sermon was delivered during a period of intense friction between British colonial authorities and Massachusetts colonists, right around the time occupying British troops were being requested and resistance to the Townshend Acts was mounting. In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Softcover. No binding or wraps of any sort. First page is the title page, which is detached from the text block. 43 pages, whip-stitched together, with only traces of stiff glue on the spine. It's not clear whether it was removed from a larger volume (I think not) or if it was never bound to begin with. The first numbered page is page 6, although it is the verso of the 2nd leaf, so it seems that a leaf is missing at the front (likely a half-title page). The sermon is entirely here. It is on Ecclesiastes 9:18, "Wisdom is better than weapons of War." Preached before the Artillery Company. For historical context, the Sugar Act was passed in 1764, the Stamp Act was passed in 1765, and the Townsend Act in 1767. The Boston Massacre would occur 3 years after the publication of this sermon, and the Tea Party in 1773. It was a long simmer before the Revolutionary War began in earnest. Rev. Daniel Shute was the Pastor of the Third Church in Hingham, MA. A scarce early American imprint. Please email with questions or to request photos. Measures about 5 x 7.5 inches. Protected in a mylar sleeve.…
