Hsu (1892-1982) beschreibt die "Schlacht um Shanghai" (August bis November 1937) zu Beginn des Zweiten Japanisch-Chinesischen Krieges, die nach blutigen Kämpfen mit der Eroberung durch die Japaner endete. Er konzentriert sich dabei auf das Verhalten der Besatzer in den chinesischen und den von Europäern bevölkerten Stadtteilen nach der Eroberung (bis Ende Januar 1938). Hsu war Politologe und hatte an der Columbia University promoviert. Ab 1937 war er für das chinesische Außenministerium tätig. Er ging 1949 mit der nationalchinesischen Regierung nach Taiwan und war Botschafter des Landes in Bolivien und Peru sowie Kanada. - Gutes Exemplar.
