This extremely rare, antiquarian, First Edition, British history, boats and steamships book, entitled "The Canadian Pacific Quadruple-Screw Atlantic Liner & Pleasure-Cruising Steamship: "Empress of Britain" - Britain's Largest Post-War Steamship" is written by The Shipbuilder & Marine Engine-Builder, and is the Souvenir Number edition.Published in 1931 by The Shipbuilder Press in London, this First Edition, hardback book is in good condition overall, with the pages being in good condition, with moderate ageing spots on some pages within the book, and minor wear, marks and creases on the blue clothbound hardcover and spine of the book. This book requires an additional courier charge of £8.50, due to the high value and rarity of this book.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, with strip of tape from mount adhering to the blank second leaf of the bifolium. Folded once. The recipient ('Dear Sir') is not named. Signed 'J. Scott. Russell'. Apparently responding to a request for an autograph from an invalid, he begins by stating that he is 'sorry to hear' of the recipient's 'prolonged suffering', but that he is 'glad to learn that you occupy your inforced in [sic] thinking more about others than about yourself'. He ends by expressing pleasure in complying with the recipient's request.

Two actually congruent sections clipped from secretarial Letter Signed "J. Scott Russell", 11 x 5cm (Address as above), and 11 x 6cm (sentiment with signature), considerable loss of text which appears to have been a recommendation of another engineer perhaps for employment. Surviving text (on reverse of the two portions and as it turns out congruent ) as follows: "Presidency in India, who has brought me introductions from old friends on whom I can thoroughly rely. | He has been in charge (second fragment follows on) important Engineering Works there, which have been thoroughly successful". Address section has a discreet reference to Scott-Russell's Modern System of Naval Architecture clipped from a periodical.

Mainly a facsimile reprint of a Souvenir Number of "The Shipbuilder". These superb vessels captured here in print represented the zenith of British shipbuilding at a time when she possesed the largest merchant fleet in the world.

First special edition hard back binding in publisher's original full green leather covers, gilt title, author lettering and four Viking ships to the spine. 8vo. 10'' x 7''. Contains 248 + 1 printed pages of text. This special, private edition is a set in Excelsior type, 10 point with 2 point leading, and printed on 2-sided coated wood free art-paper. Translated into English by Katherine John. Colour and monochrome illustrations throughout. The photographs are mainly from the collections of the Archaeological Museum, Oslo University. The engravings from A/S Cloke, Oslo. Presentation inscription to Sir Amos Lowrey Ayre from Th. Ring Amundsen (Director of Moss Verft - nicknamed Værven - shipyard in Jeløya, Moss, Norway) to the front free end paper. 'Best wishes to Sir Amos Lowrey Ayre from Th. Ring Amundsen, December 1951.' Begins: 'My Dear Romaine / I have to appear as a Witness on behalf of the Admiralty in the case of "Clare's Petition of Right to the Queen" in which I am suitor.' He denies the claim that he has 'infringed Patents' with regard to 'Gun Boats', 'and I do not even remember having ever seen the Man or any body on his behalf'. He asks Romaine to help him refresh his memory with regard to communications 'in which my name appears either at White Hall or Somerset House': 'at present I am prepared to swear total ignorance of the Man and his Gun Boats'. He ends by giving an address to which Romaine should write if 'any thing can be traced to me'.

12mo, 2 pp. Bifolium. 37 lines. Text of letter clear and complete, but with damage to head of letter, causing loss to date, with traces of the album leaf to which the letter was attached on reverses. Otherwise good, on lightly-aged paper. He thanks him for his 'friendly congratulation', and has now entered his '81st. year under the most favourable conditions'. He is 'truly thankful that my affectionate Partner and Myself have through a long life been so mercifully dealt with'. Their family 'have grown up and now surround us with the most filial and unbounded affection', and 'the next generation are making the sure progress in the affectionate regards for the old people as those who have preceded them'. His many friends 'in social life and in the scientific world have for the last 50 years been my greatest solace and comfort'. He has 'endeavoured to deserve it, but any thing I have done, or able [sic] to do, is far short of the esteem in which I have been held'. He is grateful to his friends 'and the world at large for the generous manner in which I have been treated through a long and laborious life'. He ends 'In hopes of living useful for two or three more years.'.
