Hardcover. Zustand: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. First edition of this atmospheric photographic portrait of Ihei Kimura's Paris, presenting a remarkable series of colour photographs taken during the photographer's visit to the French capital in 1954. For many Japanese artists in the years following the Second World War, travel abroad remained difficult, and Paris - the historic centre of European art and culture - held an almost mythical allure. Kimura's long-held wish to visit the city was finally realized when he travelled there equipped with his Leica camera and newly developed Japanese colour film. During his stay Kimura encountered leading figures of French humanist photography, including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau, while roaming the boulevards, cafés, and commercial streets of a lively post-war Paris. The images reproduced here capture the everyday drama of urban life with the spontaneity and warmth for which Kimura is celebrated. The 117 photographs gathered in this volume are notable within Kimura's body of work for their extensive use of colour. Together they evoke the distinctive charm of the "golden" Paris of the 1950s, preserving a vivid visual record of the city through the eyes of one of Japan's most influential photographers. Parr & Badger I, p. 297; Koetzle, Eyes on Paris. Quarto (26.2 x 18.5 cm). Text in Japanese. Cream coloured cloth with original paraffin paper. Housed in publisher's photo-illustrated slipcase. Slipcase showing only the slightest hints of rubbing to the extremities. A fine copy with alike booklet and slipcase. Post-war Paris from Japanese eyes.…
