In den WarenkorbRed Hardback. Zustand: Very Good-. Reprint (first Indian edition). 1974. First Indian edition (being a facsimile of the English edition of 1916 published under the title 'Western Tibet and the British Borderland). xv, 376pp., numerous black and white illustrations and 3 maps. Charles Atmore Sherring was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and Deputy Commissioner in the Indian Civil Services, and wrote this book in 1905. Taking an opportunity to travel in his capacity as Deputy Commissioner, he toured the lesser-known tracts of Western Tibet. This area of Tibet and the areas on the British boundary are most sacred to the Buddhist and Hindu because of the presence of the holy lake of Mansarovar and the venerated peak of Kailash. Written amidst daily duties while travelling, braving tempestuous rains and freezing winds, the object of this book is non-political, and the author has omitted controversial matter. There is also a chapter by T.G. Longstaff describing an attempt to climb Gurla Mandhata, considered at that time to be the highest in the world. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear on the boards and some staining with some light indentations on the front board. There is a little staining on the top edge of the rear board. The titling on the spine is worn and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:-The author has explored new avenues in the context of Western Tibet. At a time like the present when, owing to freer access to the country, books on Tibet are becoming multiplied and the reading public is beginning to appreciate the homely truth which tells us that 'of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh', it is not too much to say that the general information on matters Tibetan is wonderfully advanced in comparison with what it was even five years ago. In fact, so far have matters gone along the whole line of Tibetan exploration that the public expects nowadays something which is decidedly new and distinctly additional to what has already been so ably put before it by writers in the past. The object of the book is entirely non-political, and most carefully have all matters controversial been omitted, as is befitting a government servant whose appointment and duties preclude him from entering upon such subjects. The subject matter of the book is quite interesting. It contains 27 chapters and 175 fine illustrations which the author has preserved from different sources to highlight the Tibetans' Govt policies, Religion, and Customs to make it an informative one. Zustand: Sehr gut. Original gilt decorated cloth, xv + 376 pages, frontispiece, numerous illustrations, several full-page illustrations, 5 maps (2 of which are folding), lower corner a bit bumped, front hing starting (but binding still very firm), a very good copy of the rather rare original edition. Famous classic on a journey to Western Tibet, including Kailash, Manasarovar and Gartok - beautiful, richly illustrated and important book of exploration in Tibet - this books started the Western veneration for Mount Kailsh. A touristic coup of British Indian politics. Also on in Garhwal and Ladakh, where the author was accompanied by Tom G. Longstaff, who describes in a chapter his 1905 attempt to climb Gurla Mandhata. In a copy we have seen Longstaff noted that it is a not well structured chaper, written because Sherring urged him, while he was Tiger hunting in the jungle. Marvellously illustrated.
