On the half-title page, the photographer boldly inscribes and signs it: "For Dick Bales -- / Art Shay / Nov. 2, 07." Richard Bales is a Chicago writer whose books include "The Short Writings of Nelson Algren" (2022) and "Nelson Algren: The Life, Work and Colleagues" (2024). Shay's lengthy captions accompany his images.
