In den WarenkorbA remarkable autograph album assembled around 1939, containing the signatures of dozens of the leading entertainers, band leaders, and athletes of the era, among them Duke Ellington, Jesse Owens, Abbott and Costello, Mae West, Fay Wray, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Tallulah Bankhead, and Walter Huston. Oblong duodecimo, bound in full padded leather, with a recent cloth backstrip. Most of the autographs are on the album leaves, a few clipped signatures or on slips of paper tipped or clipped in. The album includes the signatures of Duke Ellington, one of the greatest figures in the history of American music, on a slip cut from a menu, and Jesse Owens, winner of four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Among the musicians are the singer Ivie Anderson and the drummer Sonny Greer, both associated with Ellington, the trumpeter and band leader Sy Oliver, the swing band leader Jimmie Lunceford, and fellow band leaders Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Kay Kyser, Russ Morgan, Ted Weems, Horace Heidt, Hal Kemp, Bob Crosby, and Al Donahue, along with the saxophonist Saxie Dowell and the cornet player Nels Laakso. The singers include Tony Martin, Jack Leonard, Edythe Wright, and Bob Allen, associated with Tommy Dorsey or Hal Kemp, together with Paula Kelly, Maxine Gray, Judy Starr, Ethel Shutta, Patricia Ellis, Phil Regan, and John Boles. Among the film and stage stars are Mae West, Fay Wray of King Kong, Tallulah Bankhead, the EGOT-winning Helen Hayes, the Academy Award-winning Walter Huston, father of the director John Huston, ZaSu Pitts, Ann Miller, Dean Jagger, Wayne Morris, Dick Foran, Fuzzy Knight, Ken Murray, Ben Blue, Otis Skinner, Jane Withers, Irene Austin, the married actors Eva Sully and Jesse Block, the actresses Nancy Coleman and Gertrude Lawrence, and the comedy duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello on a single page. The athletes and others include the boxer Billy Conn, the champion ice skaters Roy Shipstad and Bess Ehrhardt, the football players Izzy Weinstock, Merl Condit, Ted C. Fisher, and Robert Dommy, and Stenio Vincent, then President of Haiti, along with the band leaders Vincent Travers and Doug Cerrige as signed In good condition, the padded leather scuffed and rubbed, the spine recently recovered in cloth. A rich cross-section of American celebrity at the close of the 1930s, uniting the giants of the swing era with Hollywood stars and champion athletes. Assembled around 1939, this album captures a remarkable cross-section of American celebrity at the close of the 1930s, from the titans of the swing era to Hollywood film stars and champion athletes. Among its signers is Duke Ellington, one of the most important figures in the history of American music, together with several members of his orchestra, including the singer Ivie Anderson and the drummer Sonny Greer, and fellow band leaders Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Jimmie Lunceford, and Kay Kyser. The athletes include Jesse Owens, whose four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics made him a global symbol of achievement, and the boxer Billy Conn. The Hollywood names range from Mae West and Fay Wray to Walter Huston, Tallulah Bankhead, and the EGOT-winning Helen Hayes, and the album even preserves the signature of Stenio Vincent, then the President of Haiti. …
