Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Two carte de visites. Albumen images, each 2½" x 4" and mounted on slightly larger cards. Back mark of photographer E.L. Mowry of Goshen, Indiana. Just about fine. Each is Signed by Maung Shaw Loo beneath his image, and Signed again by him on the verso in Burmese. In one image, Shaw Loo is pictured in western garb, and in the other in native Burmese dress. Shaw Loo (1839-1929) was Bucknell University's first international student and the first Burmese native to study in the United States. After his graduation he was admitted to the newly organized Charity Hospital College in Cleveland, where in 1867 he obtained his medical degree. President Andrew Johnson was introduced to Shaw Loo, and he later provided a recommendation for him to the King of Burma, who not only allowed him to practice medicine when he returned to Burma, but also anointed him as a Prince.
