Three books of the collected works, which are characterized as "school-discussion problems and solutions on nature," are commonly cited as Alexander's Quaestiones. The first book of the Quaestiones and the first half of the second book, here translate are concerned with physics metaphysics, psychology, divine providence inspired by discussions of Aristotle's works among Alexander and associates of his, the Quaestiones illuminate the functioning of a philosophical school in the early third century A. D. In their emphasis on resolving apparent anomalies and contradictions, they exemplity the process by which Aristotle's thought came to be regarded as "Aristotelianism," andthey reveal the influence of the doctrines of Hellenistic philosophy The translation of some of these first into Arabic and then into Latin played an important role in the transmission of ancient Greek philosophy to the medieval world. Of more than historical interest, Alexander's Quaestiones cast light on Aristotle's views on such issues as the problemofuniversals and the relation between form and matter. This volume completes the translation…in this series of Quaestiones attributed to Alexander of Aphrodisias, the leading ancient commentator on Aristotle. The Quaestiones are concerned with physics and metaphysics, psychology and divine providence. They exemplify the process whereby Aristotle's thought came to be organised into 'Aristotelianism' and show how interpretations were influenced by doctrines of Hellenistic philosophy. Some, translated into Arabic and thence into Latin, played a part in the transmission of ancient Greek philosophy to the medieval world. Those interested in Aristotle's psychological views will find this half of Quaestiones particularly valuable. Ten of the problems discussed explicitly involve issues raised in On the Soul, including the unity of apperception and the transition from first to second actuality in the act of contemplation. A further dozen concern problems in physical theory, including infinity, necessity and potentiality. Quaestio 2.21 concerns divine providence and helps supplement our knowledge of Alexander's position based on surviving Arabic fragments of his On Providence. The Mantissa is a collection of short discussions, transmitted as a supplement to the treatise On the Soul by the Aristotelian commentator Alexander of Ap…hrodisias (c.200 AD). The collection includes discussion of a range of topics, among them the nature of soul and intellect, theories of how seeing takes place, issues in ethics, and the nature of fate. The text is based upon a new collation of the principal manuscript, the ninth century Venetus Marcianus graecus 258, and the apparatus corrects Bruns' misreportings of the principal manuscript and of the others that he used. Account has also been taken of the medieval Arabic and Latin versions of some of the sections which circulated independently, notably On Intellect which had a substantial influence on medieval philosophy. The introduction is chiefly concerned with the manuscripts and the relation between them. The commentary is based on the notes to the editor's English translation of the work (London: Duckworth and Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2004); however, the commentary also takes into account more recent work on the collection by various scholars.
