Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Sharankumar Limbale s stories open up a brutal and cruel world conditioned and sanctioned by the caste system. They present an account of Dalit lives in post-independence India, with the Ambedkarite movement and the schisms within it, as a prominent backdrop. The anti-Dalit logic of reserved constituencies, the predicament of Dalit writing, the fallout of communal violence for those at the margins, the implications of festivals like Ganapati, the contradictions of job reservations, the horrors of the institution of schooling; family, childhood, friendships, love, sexuality-all take on dark new hues. They are also a rare and moving account of Dalit masculinity today. Dalit Brahmin is a sarcastic epithet for the urban, educated Dalit middle class who look down upon their own folk much as the Brahmins do, and seek to distance themselves from their caste identity. Yet, it is also this class which bears the responsibility of emancipating the Dalit masses from the chains of caste. The stories, told in the first or third person, speak directly to the reader and carry the authority of testimony. Each story sets out to correct, to inform, and to illuminate the changing lives of rural and small-town Dalits. Unsettling and exuding a stark raw power, these vibrant cameos-seamlessly translated by Priya Adarkar-comfortably bridge the difficult divides between imaginative literature, autobiographical fiction and documentary narrative. A must read for all those who love India and Indian literature. …

Hardcover. Zustand: New. "Vande Mataram showcases the trials and tribulations faced by Bhausaheb Kinikar, a Mahar, gleaned through his attempt at writing an autobiography. Kinikar is in a quandary - what should he write about, what should be his focus, and what should be his objective. He knows that his story must be truthful, honest and have integrity. He wants to create awareness of the effect of centuries of exploitation, oppression, discrimination and injustice faced by Dalits. He hopes to bring about a change in society through his writing. The novel shifts between Kinikar's past and present and the changing attitudes of his family in their assertion of their religious affiliations, the boycott by his neighbours when his caste is exposed and rejection by his own community of Mahars for becoming 'brahminized'. The novel symbolizes love and respect for one's Motherland and unquestioned patriotism. But which Motherland is being invoked? One that is casteist, prejudiced and unfair and looks upon some sections of society as 'sub-human' or a Motherland which ensures implementation of the affirmative action guaranteed by the Constitution to create a more egalitarian, fair, just society in which the stigma of 'caste' does not exist?".…

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Sanatan is the gut-wrenching story of Bhimnak Mahar and his ilk, who have been subjected to barbaric abuse and inhuman discrimination by the upper castes over centuries. The story begins with the young Bhimnak in pre-Independence India. It then traverses time and geographical boundaries to end with Bhimnak's grandson. The circular narrative pattern is reflective of the endless cycle of pain that the Mahars are unable to break free from, no matter how hard they try, no matter where they go, no matter if they change their identity and religion. Using myths, the Puranas and historical texts as resources, Sharankumar Limbale rewrites Dalit history in this novel as he attempts to tell the truth, with an intention to build what he calls 'a new and progressive social order'. Limbale not just brings his reader face to face with uncomfortable realities, he also suggests what could be an alternative social order in the future.…
