Zustand: Very Good. [In the Field, New Guinea, early 1944]. An original watercolour painting (unframed, 700 × 3235 mm), on one sheet of paper backed with fine linen. Some thumb-tack holes and a few chips (confined mainly to the top edge); paper lightly tanned and slightly foxed; overall, in excellent condition, with the watercolours still very vibrant. An impressive panorama in all respects: the size (over three metres wide); the quality of the artwork; the region it depicts - the site of a significant Australian military victory that was a turning point in the defeat of the Japanese forces in New Guinea . The Battle of Shaggy Ridge took place between December 1943 and February 1944. 'Shaggy Ridge was a 6.5-kilometre long spur dotted by several rocky outcrops, which the Australians dubbed "Green Pinnacle", "The Pimple", "Green Sniper's Pimple" and "McCaughey's Knoll". To the north and north-west of Shaggy Ridge, two high features were identified as "Prothero I" and "Prothero II", while the Kankiryo Saddle to the north-east joined Faria Ridge and divided the Faria River from the Mindjim River. The Japanese had established numerous strong posts and positions along the ridge, blocking the Australian advance towards the coast, where they were aiming to secure Bogadjim and Madang. The ridge dominated the area around it, standing at 1,700 metres (5,600 ft), and in clear weather offered observation as far north as Madang, although largely the area was covered in thick fog which greatly reduced visibility. The sheer nature of the terrain meant that there was only a single track along the ridge line which was . "in places . only wide enough for one man to pass with sheer drops on either side"' (Wikipedia, quoting Keogh and Grant). The panorama incorporates all these features, and leaves the viewer in no doubt as to the inhospitable nature of the terrain - a testament to the skill of the artist, identified in the inscription in the bottom left-hand corner: 'With the Compliments of | HQ - 15 Aust. Inf. Bde. AIF. || Int. Section | W.E. Green Pte'. Private Green was attached to the 15th Brigade Army Intelligence unit in the Markham and Ramu Valleys during the Battle of Shaggy Ridge. William Ellis Green OAM (1923-2008) is much better known to later generations of Australians as the cartoonist 'WEG' (and he is famous in Victoria for his VFL/AFL premiership posters produced from 1954 until his death). Provenance: Major-General George Alan Vasey (1895-1945), from October 1942 in command of the 7th Division in New Guinea, 'then fighting its way north along the Kokoda Trail. His leading soldiers entered Kokoda on 2 November. [Later] Vasey's division fought the grim battles for Sanananda and Gona on the north coast of Papua. For much of 1943 Vasey trained the 7th Division on the Atherton Tableland, Queensland, before leading it throughout the successful Lae-Nadzab campaign in New Guinea'. After Lae was captured on 16 September 'he sent his troops up the Markham Valley and into the Ramu Valley. The 2nd/16th Battalion stormed Shaggy Ridge on 27 December and the division continued the offensive towards Madang. Major W.B. Russell recalled providing a platoon to escort Vasey to Shaggy Ridge: "They cleaned and tried to polish their sodden boots and equipment as though it was a ceremonial parade. Whenever General Vasey appeared, either on foot or in a jeep, it was all the troops could do to avoid calling out ''How are you George?'', such a sense of comradeship prevailed between the General and his men'. In February 1944 Vasey was evacuated sick, shortly before his division was relieved'. He was presented with this painting prior to his departure. 'Early in 1945 he was given the 6th Division, which was fighting around Wewak in New Guinea. He flew north to assume command, but on 5 March 1945 the Hudson aircraft in which he was travelling crashed into the sea off Cairns killing all on board' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). The panorama was subsequently purchased from the Vasey estate by Ray Hellier, an Australian collector of militaria. After Hellier's death in 2006, his collection was catalogued and offered for sale by Kay Craddock Antiquarian Booksellers in August 2008 (see item 449). This impressive and significant painting has been in a private collection since then. Signed.
