Seton (captain, 7th Middlesex (London Scottish) Regiment, barrister & Recorder of Devizes, Wiltshire and Miss E(lizabeth) Seton, and letter of introduction to R.G. Seton's brother from H. Maynard, 1889, in envelope. Sir James Lumsden Seton, 8th Baronet, 1835-1884, of Pitmedden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In later life he was captain in the 102nd Regiment, serving in India during the Mutiny and in the Abyssian Campaign. He also wrote on military matters: Notes on the Operations of the North German Troops in Lorraine and Picardy, 1872, Organization of our Infantry Forces, 1880, &c. Seton's Diary begins with memoranda of contacts in London & Paris, including A. Hobhouse, India Board. In 1854, at the age of 21, he visits Lyons, Avignon, Nimes, Arles, etc. and lastly Paris. At the French capital, Seton visits the Conservatoire & Notre Dame but also more interestingly a Blind School (Ecole Des Jeunes Avengles) and the Montmartre Abattoir, both described in some detail. The Grand Tour Diary concentrates, as would be expected, on art galleries and museums, starting in Naples; Herculaneum, Pompeii, Roman ruins around Naples, Rome: St. Peter's, Vatican, the Capitol, Palazzos, Villa Albani, Ruins, Studios. After Rome, Seton travels to Tivoli, the Via Appia, Siena, Florence, Pisa, Bologna, Venice, concluding in Vienna. …
