We have here a book of intrigue and espionage, so thrillingly and convincingly written that it is difficult to believe the author is not recording actual facts, which a certain Col. Hutchison has seen on the spot. The first chap…ter, which describes the post-War alteration of the map of Europe and the geography of a Silesian village, is a little dry, but the author soon introduces us to Hans, the hero. The whole story of this young man's life as a German Secret Service Agent, his dealings with the Governor of Kattowitz, his love affair and of a certain magnificently kept promise is most dramatically told. - CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket accompanies this book. Price to spine 7/6 NET. Initially, there were chips at the top and bottom of the spine but I have repaired these with colour like paper and replaced part of the book title 'THE GOVERNOR OF' and it looks really good. It brings the dustjacket back to what was originally there. Few small closed edge tears and light creasing but these are made better by the protective archival sleeve that I have housed the dustjacket in. There is also some soiling to the lighter areas of the dustjacket.Yellow cloth boards, fairly clean in general. Where the initial chip was missing from the dustjacket, the cloth has darkened at that exact place. Corners lightly bumped. Other than this, the boards are in a very nice clean condition and firmly bound to the inner page block. - Light browning throughout the book. On the half title page, there is a large inscription dated as: 'England I.IX.44 [1st September 1944]. I am unable to decipher what it says but I am guessing it will have something to do with the second world war WWII]. Apart from browning, all the pages are clean and tightly bound. This was prepared and published by the Welfare Committee of the Persia and Iraq Force (PAIForce) General HQ; undated, but Paiforce was approved in August 1942, and its GHQ established in Baghdad in September. It opens with Seton Lloyd's potted history "The Story of Iraq" (reprinted from "Maps of Iraq with Notes for Visitors", 1929). Most of it however contains practical advice covering the SSAFA (Soldier's, Sailor's and Airmen's Families Association), legal aid, clubs and hostels (in Baghdad, Ashar, Shueiba, Hillah, Musaiyib, Margil, Mosul, and Kirkuk), education (PAIForce's Army Education Corps aiming to develop interests servicemen hope to pursue in civilian life), sport (by "Commentator" at the Iraq Times), tours by the Baghdad YMCA, advice on writing home, music, PAIForce paper "Trunk Call", NAAFI (Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes), entertainment, churches (in Iraq and Bahrain), currency, and health. The 3 maps include Places of Interest in Iraq, Baghdad and Environs, and Baghdad Amenities Area. The latter shows 27 locations along both sides of the Tigris bounded by the King Faisal Statue (NW) and YMCA (SE). The adverts feature several well known local hotels and suppliers. Extremely rare institutionally, unrecorded on Worldcat and Library Hub.
