Contemporary inscription in pencil and later owner's name in ink on front fly leaf. Wear to the edges of the boards, front joint is split (with front cover nearly detached), else a good copy with scattered foxing.

Reprint edition. Octavo (19.5cm). Stab-sewn pamphlet in white printed paper wraps; 30pp. Spine reinforced; ownership markings at top of title page in ink and pencil; rubbed at edges, overall: Good. With a list of 18 existing Shaker communities. First written to contest a bill in the New York legislature, but later published as a way to introduce Shakers "in their proper character, as citizens of the Commonwealth, and under the influence and operation of its laws" and to "solve the many questions proposed by the religious world, concerning these singular people, as a religious community" ([2]). First edition published in 1830 (SABIN 79696), and frequently reprinted; this edition revised by Calvin Green before publication. RICHMOND 740.

Published by order of the ministry, in union with the Church. A correction of the record on the part of the Shakers, who identify in the preface that many contradictory and incorrect statements have made about them due to a general curiousness about them from the general public. Brown leather, titled in gilt on spine, all edges sprinkled; plain endpapers; [viii], 384pp. A straight, tight copy, spine and board edges sunned, spine rubbed with worming to base, internally clean: Good.
