Folder (red cover) with 12 brightly colored, lose monthly plates on Japan paper (Folder partially used). Size 39x29,5 cm * Rare ! --- Keisuke Serizawa produced kataezome calendar folios starting with calendar year 1946. The 1946 calendar is shown in the catalogue for the 2001 exhibition of Serizawa's work held in Scotland. These calendar sets (one page for each month) are stenciled on handmade untrimmed Japanese mulberry paper. --- Serizawa Keisuke (j 13. (Quelle Wikipedia) Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 700.…

First edition, no.9 of a limited edition of 80, inscribed. Three lithograph illustrations by Serizawa tipped in, a fourth loosely inserted, numerous photographic illustrations throughout. 4to., measuring 260 by 185mm. Original half woven cloth covered boards over painted white calf, gilt titling to upper cover with lithograph laid down, gilt edges, original mustard yellow chitsu folding case with ceramic disk embedded into upper board, cardboard outer box with red ribbon title slip with gilt lettering, some wear to edges of outer cardboard box, a near fine copy. 419pp. Osaka, Leach, Showa 59 [i.e. A highly decadent book celebrating the history of ceramic plates, especially blue and white porcelain.   The author and editor, Miyashita Kozo (dates unknown), was a medical doctor and historian of ancient ceramics. In this title, he takes a closer look at ceramics, both stoneware and porcelain, from the Seto and Mino regions. The book also includes a preface by Yanagi Sori (1915?2011), who was an industrial designer and son of Yanagi Soetsu, founder of the Mingei Movement. The illustrations by Serizawa, printed in lithograph, provide a charming addition to the essays and photographs. Though he was a textile dyer and printmaker, Serizawa had a deep appreciation for ceramics (indeed all traditional folk crafts in Japan), and had ceramicists in his close circle. There are three illustrations tipped into the book, and a fourth, extra illustration loosely inserted. There is also a lovely scenic illustration pasted on the cover, also by Serizawa.   The production of this book would have been very expensive, which would give some explanation to the small limitation of 80 copies. Indeed, the price of the book in 1984 was ¥45,000, a large sum at the time. This particular copy is inscribed in the inside of the fording case by the author, Miyashita Kozo.   Rare. Only 2 copies in OCLC (National Library of Australia and The Met).…

His unique artistic style and printing methods have been recognized as a unique Japanese folk-art. His works are highly valuable and well collected by world museums and private collectors alike. . *** Per Wikipedia: . "Serizawa Keisuke, was a Japanese textile designer. In 1956, he was designated as a Living National Treasure by the Japanese government for his Katazome stencil dyeing technique. A leading member of the Mingei movement founded by Yanagi Soetsu, Serizawa visited Okinawa several times and learned the "Ryukyu Bingata" techniques of dyeing. . His folk-art productions included kimono, paper prints, wall scrolls, folding screens, curtains, fans, and calendars. He also produced illustrated books, including Don Quixote, Vincent van Gogh and A Day at Mashiko. In 1981, the Municipal Serizawa Keisuke Art Museum was opened in the city of Shizuoka. Another museum, the Serizawa Keisuke Art and Craft Museum was opened in 1989 in Sendai. . The distinguishing trait of Serizawa's Katazome method is the use of the starch mixture to create, not a colored area as is current in direct-dyeing process, but a blank, a non-dyed example that forms a part of the pattern and that can later be multi-colored by hand or monochrome as the designer sees fit." [Japan c.1960]. Ten sheets, on deckle-edge hand-made Washi paper, 10 polychrome stencil "Katazome" prints, very clean, 33.5 x 40.5 cm., complete suite, printed in a small edition. FIRST & ONLY LIMITED EDITION OF [200] COPIES R A R E ! . . *** **** *** . . . CREATED BY A "LIVING NATIONAL TREASURE" . , * Keisuke Serizawa [1895-1984] was named a Living National Treasure in 1956 by the Japanese Emperor. A leader in modern folk art, his technique known as "Katazome," or stencil dyeing was a pioneer effort. Born in Shizuoka in 1895, he has been the leading exponent for stencil dyeing ["Katazome"] on cloth and paper. He applied his technique to hand-made Japanese Washi paper and was an active illustrator of books. He used paper cut-out patterns then applied colors to the stencils. His works are highly coveted by museums & collectors throughout the world. . Serizawa was the leading exponent for the Sosaku movement [Creative Art Movement] along with his close friends: Yanagi Soetsu, Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leach among others. His works have been hailed as the most typical & charming folk-arts from Japan. . * This suite shows Serizawa's great interest and support of the hand-made papermakers and their villages of Northern Japan. The hand process of paper making is done in the winter, when the plants are dormant and the fibers are easily removed. This process requires the makers to immerse their hands in the freezing cold clear river water to separate the fibers and to perform the other hand processes involving freezing cold water, which had inhibited young would-followers of this folk-art from continuing. Few makers are found today using the old and most traditional time-honored methods. . * This suite then shows the whole process of hand-made Washi paper from beginning to end in a tribute to the Ogawa village paper-maker's stamina and stubborn attitude to stick with the old ways. Papermaking by hand is now a dying art in Japan, hand-made paper makers are now few and ever dwindling. This is a graphic record of the process and a superb and fine example of Serizawa's unique "Kataezome" technique and printing process on that hand-made Washi paper. This Washi paper is of an unusual large, Deluxe broadside size and was likely made especially for Serizawa to do this series and is 33 x 40.5 cm., except for the last example which is on stiff handmade-paper which is 33 x 38 cm. printed in Aizuri or with indigo-blue ink. Suites or even single prints of Serizawa's work are now exceptionally rare & seldom found on the market for sale.
