Cette publication renferme les armoiries de certains abbés de Senones, d'après les dessins originaux contenus dans le manuscrit, et le plan de l'ancienne église de l'abbaye, dessiné par Dom Pelletier en 1741 - plan dépliant reproduit en fac-simile. Dom Calmet commence ainsi la préface de son manuscrit : "Dès que je me suis vu tranquille dans l'Abbaye de Senones, où il a plu à la Providence de m'établir Abbé par le choix de mes confrères, je me suis résolu d'en écrire l'histoire ; et pour y réussir, j'ai soigneusement recueilli tous les monuments historiques et tous les titres de l'Archive qui y sont en très grans nombre et très bien conservés, et les ayant rangés par ordre chronologique, j'en ai tiré des connaissances suffisantes non seulement pour dresser une liste exacte de nos Abbés, mais même une histoire assez suivie de cette illustre et ancienne Maison". First edition in English of this engaging Saharan travel narrative, translated from the French of the previous year. Puigaudeau, a French ethnologist, here recounts her journey across Mauretania undertaken with the photographer Marion Sénones, the pair travelling in disguise as Moorish men. Combining first-hand observation with ethnographic insight, the work records encounters with local communities, landscapes, and material culture, and reflects Puigaudeau's developing interest in Saharan rock art and pre-Islamic traditions. An excellent letter, exhibiting precisely the sort of indignation one would wish for from such a renowned satirist. As a result of the furore caused by the publication in 1762 of his best-known work, 'Le Colporteur', Chevrier fled to Holland. The French government attempted to have him extradited, and his death that same year was rumoured to have been caused by poisoning. 3pp, 4to. On bifolium. Thirty-nine lines of text. In good condtion, lightly aged. The item has been expertly mounted, and the thin white-paper mount still adheres to reverse of the final leaf. Slight damage caused to edges by the breaking open of the seal has been repaired with the same white paper. Addressed, on reverse of the second leaf to 'Le Reverend Pere Dom Pelletier curé de Senones'. Good firm signature 'Chevrier'. He praises Pelletier for 'les Peines que vous avez prises pour rassembler l'ouvrage que vous venez de donner'. Considering the criticism it has met with, he has 'presque Envie de haïr les Lettres'. He continues with reference to 'Mon Plan moins respectable que le votre'. Pelletier should be aware that many of the great 'doivent leur Eclat à l'adresse d'un copiste, à la dexterité d'un apoticaire, ou à la fidelité d'un tailleur'.
