The Liber Brunensis for 1870 was produced in December 1869. the initial Liber Brunensis was a pamphlet that included class lists and membership lists of the several organizations. Photographs of seniors was a feature added in the 1896 Liber. In 1895 the Liber included lists of female students in a section titled "Co-Education." In 1908 there were no women's pages and in 1909 the Women's College initiated its own yearbook, Brun Mael, which was published until 1970, after which the Liber Brunensis became the yearbook of the coeducational institution brought about by the merger of Brown and Pembroke. The Liber has continued to be published annually, except when prevented by wartime conditions in 1944. A combined 1944-1945 book was issued the following year. Brown University is a private Ivy League research university in Providence, Rhode Island. It is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States, founded in 1764 as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. One of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution, it was the first college in the United States to codify in its charter that admission and instruction of students was to be equal regardless of their religious affiliation. The university is home to the oldest applied mathematics program in the United States, the oldest engineering program in the Ivy League, and the third-oldest medical program in New England. It was one of the early doctoral-granting U.S. institutions in the late 19th century, adding masters and doctoral studies in 1887. In 1971, Brown's coordinate women's institution, Pembroke College, was fully merged into the university. As of March 2022, 11 Nobel Prize winners have been affiliated with Brown as alumni, faculty, or researchers, as well as 1 Fields Medalist, 7 National Humanities Medalists and 10 National Medal of Science laureates. Other notable alumni include 27 Pulitzer Prize winners, 1 U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice, 4 U.S. Secretaries of State, over 100 members of the United States Congress, 58 Rhodes Scholars, 21 MacArthur Genius Fellows, and 38 Olympic medalists. The John Hay Library is the second oldest library on campus. Opened in 1910, the library is named for John Hay (class of 1858), private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of State under William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. 105th edition [stated]. Presumed first printing.
