[minimal shelfwear, very slight bump and touch of fraying at upper rear corner, minor internal staining on a couple of pages; the jacket has some smudging and light staining, with a small tear at the base of the spine, which is also a bit age-toned, and tiny nicks at several corners]. (pen & ink drawings in black/red/gray) Sendak's second solo book (following "Kenny's Window," blurbed with four review excerpts on the rear jacket flap), about Martin, a young boy who can't get his mother's attention, or an answer from her to his question: "Where is Very Far Away?" So he puts on a cowboy outfit and determines to go there himself, "where somebody will answer my questions." Walking down the street, he meets and converses with a sparrow and a horse, both of whom are dissatisfied with their lives and also want to go Very Far Away. Fortunately, they meet up with a streetwise cat, who knows the way, and takes them there! The quartet has a bit of a colloquy, but their cameraderie soon dissolves into bickering; the other animals move on (to someplace even farther away), and Martin heads back home. Like "Kenny's Window," there are dreamlike elements involved (the horse's fondest wish is to find a place "where a horse can dream"), and it's not hard to discern in both books the seeds of what would have its full flowering in Sendak's much-loved classics, "Where the Wild Things Are" and "In the Night Kitchen." Like most Harper's children's books of the era, there is no edition statement (only the 1957 copyright date), but the unclipped jacket (with a $2.00 printed price and a photo of the young Sendak on the rear panel) and the full green cloth binding with an illustration of the cat, identify it as a first printing.
