In den WarenkorbCorrespondence course complete in 12 original parts, each with the original study sheet and envelope for its return to the institute inserted loose, all of which are numbered in pencil for correspondent number '45861'. 20.4 x 10.9 cm. Tall thin 8vo., all in the original blue printed wrappers, stapled as issued. In very good condition. Self-improvement course to train memory and mental acuity. Pelmanism was immensely popular at the time, and one of its memory-based exercises using cards became a much played parlour game at the time and continues today. The system was originally devised by William Ennever in 1890s and was taught through a correspondence course from the Pelham Institute in London and later from 6 overseas branches, our set comes from the New York branch. It was intended to cure problems like a 'grasshopper mind', procrastination and forgetfulness (ie ADHD). Its use was widespread and was practised and promoted by people of important such as British prime minister H. H. Asquith, Baden-Powell, Rider Haggard, Jerome K. Jerome, and composer Dame Ethel Smyth as well as thousands of others. Our set has some evidence of readership through pencil annotations in the first part only - clearly the ADHD won!
