Completely clean inside and out. Essay about Selden's work starts on the front cover and continues for several pages inside. A number of full-page color plates. This catalog was prepared to accompany the exhibition at Naviglio Gallery in Milan in 1985, curated by Renato Cardazzo. 11 1/2" high X 9" wide.

First part (of two) of "Historiae Anglicanae Scriptores Decem," a pioneering work of English medieval history containing the Latin texts of the chronicles of Simeon of Durham, John, prior of Hexham, Richard, prior of Hexham, Aelred of Rievaulx, Ralph de Diceto, John Brompton of Jervaulx, Gervase of Canterbury, Thomas Stubbs, William Thorne and Henry Knighton. This first volume contains the chronicles of the first six chroniclers (from Simeon of Durham to John Brompton of Jervaulx included). Also contains a double engraved in-text illustration (at top of columns 339/340), and an engraved in-text illustration at bottom of column 1114. Modern endpapers and fly leaves. The first six leaves as well as the last leaf were expertly repaired along inner margin. The Index leaf numbered xlix / l is missing. Text in Latin. Binding in overall very good, interior in good+ to very good condition. Sir Roger Twysden, 2nd Baronet (1597-1672), of Roydon Hall in Kent, was an English historian and politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1625 and 1640. (From Wikipedia).

I towards the rear, occasional tiny spots and scorches, volume two slightly toned with some leaves (eg. 4C3, S1) more so, small hole to 3K3 affecting a couple of words. Contemporary speckled brown calf. Both vols. rebacked some time ago with vol. I wearing better. Raised bands, gilt title labels to vol. I but lost to vol. II, gilt spines, triple-filet borders to boards with gilt armorial centrepieces, edges sprinkled brown, endpapers renewed. Vol. I: headcap a bit worn, some chips to spine, joints a little creased, Vol. II: Spine worn, endcaps and labels lost, joints split but cords holding firm. All board surfaces a bit crackled with some scuffing, corners worn, but still very good, sound copies overall. Armorial gilt centrepiece possibly of the McCulloch family, with unusual coronet. To front pastedown of each volume, modern bookplate of the eminent medieval historian Richard Barber, with a few pencilled bibliographical notes. 'Editiones principes' of English medieval chronicles, and church and royal histories (titles of individual works are listed on pp. XLIX-L of the edition.
